Pedialyte for 11 day old

So LO was born on the 13th (haven't had a chance to post his birth story or annoucement yet). He still has jaundice and today his pediatrician recommended giving him an ounce of Pedialyte 3 or 4 times a day to help flush out his system and lower his bilirubin level more quickly. Has anyone heard of this? I've been breastfeeding every 2-3 hours, LO has had frequent BMs, and I've exposed him to some sunlight each day, but the jaundice hasn't improved so his Dr wants me to give him the Pedialyte for 3 or 4 days. Has anyone heard of this? Is this safe and healthy for an 11 day old baby?

No experience, but if your pedi says it's ok, I would imagine it is safe to give.

I don't understand.. This is the second time you've asked strangers on a message board to verify/confirm/contradict information provided by medical professionals. If you don't trust your medical team, perhaps it's time to find a new one.

I always like to get a second opinion on everything. Obviously the medical professionals' opinion would receive higher weight (than the opinions of strangers), but since my son is only a few days old and I am a FTM, I really don't have enough experience with this pediatrician to trust her 100% just yet. I was just hoping that someone could put my mind at ease that the doctor I chose is not completely crazy and giving me bad advice.

The funny thing is that the vast majority of physicians will instruct patients to a) stay off message boards, and b) stay off google, and prefer to refer their patients to specific sites for medical and scientific information. You know, sites where the information has been verified and is medically sound.

If you truly think your pediatrician could be completely crazy and giving you bad advice (which would mean all of his/her patients are likely receiving bad advice), get a second opinion from another medical professional that has the opportunity to review your LO's medical history and perform an exam. Do not assume that the pediatricians of strangers, who have never examined your child, are in a position to determine that your pediatrician is crazy.

Ahh, situations like this always reinforce my decision to pursue the other "D".....

Perhaps I should clarify - I wasn't really asking whether I should follow the advice of my doctor nor was I asking for a medical opinion regarding my child specifically. I was really just wanting to know if anyone else had ever heard of this.

I always heard BM or formula ONLY until 4m of age minimum. If your pedi is recommending something else based on your particular circumstances and you have concerns, they should be directed to another medical professional for a second opinion.

I would get a different pediatrician's opinion, because I would be really hesitant to give my newborn anything like that. We just got done with jaundice issues, and I had to supplement with formula for a few days before my milk came in to help clear it up while she was on a billiblanket... I wasn't thrilled to even do that but it made sense to me. Pedialyte doesn't, but I'm also not a medical professional.

I would not give anything but BM to a baby before ~6mo. My suggestion would be to seek a second opinion.
