Two vessel cord?

Anyone else have this found on their anatomy scan? I know what this means, and I know it could mean nothing for our lil yoda but because I've worked NICU, I can't help but think of the what ifs. Any second (or more) time moms have reassuring stories?

Re: Two vessel cord?

  • Yes! My daughter had an SUA and was perfectly fine. The radiologist at the anatomy scan made it sound like she would not survive because she would not get enough nutrients. I spent a long time bawling until my OB told me this was very unlikely. She was a little small (6lb8oz) but I was induced 3 weeks early due to other concerns.

She's now in the 99th percentile for height and a wild, almost 2 year old!!

Hope all turns out just as good for you!!
    6/2014: IUI #3 - Menopur + trigger = BFP!!
    Betas: 9dpiui=15.3, 14dpiui=385, 16dpiui=1162
    7/10/2014: 1st ultrasound - 1 beautiful little heartbeat (121bpm)

  • Being a postpartum nurse, I saw the other side of things - took care of a good handful of healthy babies with SUA!
  • I just found out my LO has this as well. I had to go for a specialized US an hour away yesterday for this and EIF. Apparently both are fairly common, and can be basically no big deal. I'm still freaking out a bit anyway, of course...

  • I had the two vessel cord with my son. At first we had to wait to do bloodwork & another ultrasound to rule out anything else. But I felt ok about it after that, I ended up with prob like 10 ultrasounds including the day he was born & 2 non-stress tests a week the last two months. They just monitored his growth which was always fine. I ended up having him 1 day late & he weighed 7.5 lbs. he's a very healthy 3.5 year old & I don't have it this time. Which is weird for us to get used to only having 1 ultrasound, while it was annoying & costly it was nice to know that our baby was doing good. Good luck to you!

That's terrible that they did that to you. They didn't tell us anything at the ultrasound, my doctor called me like 3 days later.
  • One of my twins has a 2 vessel cord. Our specialist told us that it's seen frequently with twins.
  • A 2 vessel cord is not concerning unless it is coupled with other markers for a disorder. Just alone most babies are born happy and healthy!

  • Thank you ladies, the logical professional in me knows this is probably nothing, especially since everything else is perfectly fine but the spazzy FTM in me craves reassurance. It's also very nice to have the extra u/s at 28, 32 and 36 weeks and since we're in canada, there's no extra cost :-)

Exactly this, cared lots of babies with 2 vessel cords in the well baby nursery of the postpartum unit.  All of mine have thrived.
