Blankets in the crib?

So as a FTM I'm curious of when you STM started putting blankets in the crib? I have no idea when this starts to be ok? DS was having a hard time going down tonight due to a late nap and my mom stopped by in the process. So we quietly walk in and DS is in his crib but we kept the light off just to watch him. She says grab him a little light blanket to hold. I'm paranoid and say no way. She grabs a blanket and gives it to him. He holds it for a while and we leave. So about 2 min later I go look at the video monitor and it's completely over his head. So I freak out and go in and take it out. Then she proceeds to say "oh lord you kids all slept with a blanket and turned our fine." Nope. He's not ready to take it away from his face so no blankets or bumpers in the crib for him for a long while!

My pedi also said a light blanket is ok (thinking like her light A+A swaddle blanket). My LO is obsessed with her soft minky blankets and I wrap her in it and let her nap on the weekends with it. I know my mom also wraps her in a minky blanket for naps at her home. We both check on her regularly. I wouldn't put her down at night with it.

If memory serves, they aren't recommended until 1 year. My DS started with his at six months though. It was sort of inadvertent. I noticed a smile when he saw the blanket and he stopped crying. It was one we'd snuggled with while nursing. We were in the middle of Ferber at the time and his crying went from nearly 45 mins to 10 the first night with blankie, then 5, etc. He is newly three and still has blanket... well, a reincarnation of it...when we realized what it had become we bought three more and circulated them so they'd be evenly worn.

Why risk it? Why worry yourself? Get a wearable blanket or sleep sack or something with some built in extra fabric if LO likes to snuggle.

I think blankets were the norm for our parents generation. My MIL was here this past weekend and kept trying to give DS a blanket and fluffy stuffed animal to sleep with in his crib.....she almost got throat punched on several occasions.

The only way my daughter will sleep is with a blanket. I haven't thought twice about it and if she falls asleep with it on her face, I just gently move it. We learned early on that she likes to have something soft touching her face--she would always get out of her swaddle and pull it up to her cheek or over her eyes. If you're nervous about it, though, just use a sleep sack.

It's definitely a generation thing. My MIL is a nursery school teacher, and she recently moved out of state that requires her to take SIDS classes. She was over last weekend and couldn't stop talking about all the "bad" things they did when they had babies. She kept asking "Are you aware of this or that?" Back then newborns slept on their bellies, with blankets, and stuffed animals. Those crazy kids!

Team minky blanket on legs for naps and sleep sack at night. We usually do the nap in whatever onesie he is wearing so I figure he needs a little more warmth.

Yeah DS naps with a blanket and I watch him on the monitor while he sleeps. He's a tummy sleeper as well. It's just at night I don't put one in with him because I won't sleep all night if so. He's a hot sleeper at night anyhow and just kicks it off which is why I never put one in there anyway. And then as he has gotten a little older and moves all over his crib it just weirds me out like I said. I know when he's about a year I will probably feel comfortable giving him one. Just funny how our moms did things and we all survived right? Lol

Sleep sacks are fine for rollers. They're fine for any age...they even make ones with foot holes for toddlers. Swaddles, which I think is what you mean bc you mentioned 'arms out' are supposed to be ditched when baby can roll.

The other day she had a hold of this bunny lovey thing that's like a little blanket so I let her have it thinking it's small she's good at pulling things away from her face and she usually wakes one last time before we go to bed any way. So she woke up and it goes right in her face and her hands are flying around trying to grab it . I ended having to go take it out. Also she likes to snuggle blankets but it's mostly to keep herself awake so she's not allowed to have one. She wears a sleep sack over her pjs instead.

We will do one year lile we did with DD. This kid kicks flails like crazy and would have a blanket over his head in no time. I don't like using blankets until they're old enough to move it of their own feee will if they need to.

Zipadeezip is all my son uses. When I'm out with him he has a silky lovey he holds and will fall asleep with but he's in his stroller and I constantly am watching him
