Does anyone know a good way to locate a "mom group" near where you live. This is my first pregnancy and I'm completely lost. Would be nice to talk to share issues and advice with people going through the same thing!
I agree that going to local events that attract moms of LOs is a good idea - library story time and such. I also recommend Meetup, though groups through the site are pretty hit or miss. I hear a lot of people talking about what great mom groups they've found and I've not really found one that works for us, despite trying out a few different ones and even paying for and creating my own meetup group.
Having IRL mom friends is important, BUT, @pearsforpoops is right, groups like this, if you become active and eventually join FB with a set of people can be AMAZING in terms of connecting about parenting issues, life problems and happiness, and all sorts of things. My group from my last pregnancy is still going strong, and I don't know how I would have survived my first year of parenting without them.
Majority of mom groups suck. It's like high school all over again. I've run into way too many at the playground with the kids I babysit. Talking shit on other moms, comparing their kids... Fuck that.
Luckily I have a few close friends with little ones, but I do plan to utilize Meetup once the baby is here. I'm a big Meetup fan and definitely recommend it. I'd definitely like to follow this group to FB when that happens. I still keep in touch with a few November Brides from the Knot via a FB group.
A lot of towns have moms groups/forums (and new resident/welcome groups). Agree with everyone- library and park are great. Early baby classes are also great way to meet other moms and find a group. Some bigger hospitals have first time moms classes that are in the first few weeks after baby is born which are great for meeting people in the same boat.
pearsforpoops I'm probably not leveraging this site as best I can. I try to go to different forums but I'm not really sure how to get more involved. Do you have suggestions?
Check out Momsclub.org I used to be the president of our local chapter. It was great when I had my first and my best friends were made through it. Not my thing nowadays but it may be for you.

If you plan to breastfeed La Leche League is a great place that you can start going to now. My local one was very welcoming to pregnant moms and it was helpful for the first few months of BFing. Also check out your local ECFE program. The one here does open gym "playdate" time twice a week and then hosts classes and things for parents and kids.
