toddler bed vs twin bed?

We have a lo on the way and we are going to move our almost 2yo out of her crib soon. I am conflicted about getting a twin or toddler bed. I worry a twin would be too much for her but will she grow out of a toddler bed quickly? Any advise or experience would be appreciated.

Re: toddler bed vs twin bed?

  • I'm cheep and didn't want to buy a bed (or mattress) for only a year or two. DD just turned 2 and has been in her twin for 6 ish months, she loves it and so do I.

  • Toddler beds are a waste of money my kids went from crib to Queen and crib to full. It was fine.
  • Thanks for the responses. I was leaning towards going for the twin so that is probably what we will do.
  • We went from crib to toddler (converted) and within a month changed to twin. The toddler was too little for us.

  • Z will go from crib to full.
  • We moved DD from her crib that converts to a toddler bed into a queen sized bed before age 4 and since we are using the same crib for DS, we plan to do the same thing.

If your crib doesn't convert, I'd go straight to the twin. You can always leave the mattress on the floor or use bedrails. GL! :)

  • We did a toddler bed and I also regret it. It is now just taking up space in our basement because I don't have anyone to pass it on to, and feel like we "should" use it for DD. Lucky for us, it was free, so we weren't out anything. Just put the twin mattress on the floor and/or buy some side rails.

  • we had one of those 3 in 1 beds.  We switched it into a toddler bed when DD was 2.  We will be making it a twin bed this fall sometime when we have down time.

  • Our crib converted to a toddler bed, so our first two used it converted very briefly. My third moved from the crib to a twin bed when we moved and his crib did not move with us (my sister had just had a baby so we were passing it down since he was able to climb out). I think the toddler bed was convenient for the three month period between when my first climbed out of the crib and when we moved to a bigger place in anticipation of her sister's arrival and I didn't want to buy something until we moved, but otherwise would have been a complete and total waste of money. I definitely wouldn't have bought a dedicated toddler bed. My three are all in twins now and I never intend to buy them another bed.

  • glad i came across this before we converted. Our LO is still in her crib but will be out before long. We are hoping the zippy sack keeps her in it for a bit longer!
  • I also want to do a twin bed w/ trundle, but have been wondering if they were even made anymore.
@Usm123 did you buy yours new?

  • Our DS1's crib is a convertible and he never tried climbing out. We switched it to the toddler bed just before he turned 3 (naps also stopped then)

We had DS2 just before DS1 turned 2. He was way too young for a toddler bed at that point and we wanted his crib set to grow with him, so DS2 got his own crib.

I personally feel a baby is a big change and I wouldn't change their bed around the same time if you can avoid it.
  • DD1 has a daybed (with trundle)...Pottery Barn Kids has a few options. Unfortunately, they just had their furniture sale (I bought her a full size canopy for her new bedroom after we move since it was almost $300 off!!!!).

  • We went straight to a twin bed with our DD and she loves it!  Make sure you get safety railings for it though.  My poor DD fell off her bed and broke her clavicle before I could convince my DH that safety rails are a must.
  • Ds started jumping out of thr crib at like 15 months. I bought a toddler bed for like $40 and used his crib mattress. He was in that u til he was almost 3 and then my mom bought him a mattress so he switched to that.
It worked for us because at the time I was watching my niece at night who was also in a toddler bed so it didnt take up to much room to have two toddler beds in his room. would have done fine in a twin and for the next lo im sure ill either just covert the vrib to the toddler or just by a twin off the bat.
  • wow 15 months, that seems early. I guess i better be more watchful bc thats how old our LO is!
