To Tell Or Not To Tell...

I have a job interview tomorrow at The Children's Place for a seasonal position. I'm 16 weeks pregnant and not sure if I should be honest and upfront and tell the interviewer or just keep it quiet. I feel like they would be upset if they found out I hid my pregnancy from them because I will start showing soon, however I don't want to be discriminated against either. What do I do?

Re: To Tell Or Not To Tell...

  • Be honest.  I can't imagine that a place called The Children's Place would frown upon having children.
    Together since 5.16.05 (16 & 19yo)
    Married since 3.6.10 (21 & 24yo)

Tell them after they've made an offer if that makes you more comfortable. With an offer made it's clearly illegal for them to renege, but you'll have peace of mind that you disclosed fairly. Good luck!

    Exactly.

  • Don't tell - people are judgemental bastards - especially HR reps hiring people.
  • I don't think keeping it to yourself during the interview is dishonest. This is YOUR personal health information, there is no reason you need to feel obligated to share it with them or feel guilty for keeping it to yourself. In fact, a lot of employers prefer NOT to know these things during an interview because they are not legally allowed to discriminate based on pregnancy, then if they decide not to hire you for another reason and it turns out you had disclosed it, now they're in a legal quagmire trying to prove that they didn't discriminate because of the pregnancy....etc etc. My dad is a business owner, and this is what he tells me anyway. If I were you, I would wait for a job offer, then let them know as soon as possible afterwards so they can plan arond you. There is still plenty of time for them to plan. And they may not have to anyway, if it is seasonal.

  • Unless you are bring hired for a full time position I don't think they will be that worried about it from my retail experience.
  • If it's a seasonal job just don't say anything, it's like them asking your age...none of their business.

    P.S. I love The Children's Place!
  • I don't think you have to share with them that you're pregnant...especially in a seasonal position.

  • I would wait until you are offered the job. Since it is short term its not like you are going to be taking a maternity leave while employeed with them...dont stress about it =)
  • I'm just worried if I don't say anything, they'll eventually find out because I'll start showing....
  • Almost no one will hire you if your pregnant. Or if you live in a state where is easier to get away with discrimination by hiring you then firing you they might do that. I had terrible luck with this when I wad expecting my daughter.
  • You don't have to say anything at all. I would once your hired but not during an interview. I'm pretty sure there are laws out there protecting women who are pregnant from being discriminated against while pregnant. I remember hearing about it when I got hired. Employers aren't allowed to ask if you have kids, so I'm assuming that means pregnant as well.

You could just tell them you have a Christmas Cookie addiction and can't stop.... ;)

But really, there is no reason you suddenly couldn't do your job w/ a baby bump.  And legally you don't have to say anything  But if it makes you feel better, once they make you the offer, you can say 'FYI, I'm 16 weeks pregnant'  but really, unless they offer you a full time position, you'll be out of there WAY before due.  You owe them nothing.
