  Is your first appointment not 'till 12 weeks? One u/s is totally normal for a healthy, low-risk pregnancy. I didn't see baby until 20 weeks with my first. Then got a "bonus" around 34 weeks to check on size.

  Why won't your doctor allow you to hear the heart beat or have an ultrasound? If it's very important to you, you might need to go to another doctor.
  I am unsure if I will buy one or not. I can't decide if it will cause more worry or comfort.

  An at-home Doppler isn't reliable until 12 weeks, so you'd be wasting your $40.

  I have one and used it a lot with my son. It's currently on loan to my sil. I am a big fan, but only if you understand that you can't freak out if you don't find the hb. I had 1 u/s with my ds, and then an extra when an issue came up later. It's perfectly normal to only have 1 u/s.

  I have the sonoline b.  I bought it from ebay.  It was nice to be able to check it at home.  It has made the rounds with 4 other friends of mine so it has gotten plenty of use.
