Can anyone tell me about prodromal labor?

my midwife said that is what this is but did not explain it too well, and from what I see online it sounds like plenty of women deal with it. The baby is posterior and she said the head is not engaged so the contractions are not dilating my cervix. Sometimes they are very painful, but mostly I can ignore them. The midwife had told me to call when the contractions were 5 minutes or less regardless of how painful they are, so I ended up being that crazy pregnant lady who went in and got sent home...please tell me someone else has done this so I feel less stupid :/ I had never felt contractions coming every 2-3 minutes like that even though they were not very painful, but I definitely feel silly. I tried to tell her on the phone that there was no pain but she had me come anyways. I know prodromal labor could last weeks (well I will be induced after next week at 42 weeks, so that will end that) but I was wondering if anyone could share their experience or any tips for getting some sleep when the contractions become painful at night. I delivered L sunny side up as well but I was only stuck in this prodromal type labor for about three days. With this one I am going on a week of constant contractions and stomach flu symptoms with no progression.

Re: Can anyone tell me about prodromal labor?

  • I did. With my dd, I had them for 4 weeks. Dilated to 6 cm. My cx were painful, about would be 2-3 minutes apart for over an hour, but otherwise, I was contracting about 5-10 minutes apart all day.

Honestly, for me, it was worse than real labor.

With ds, it was less consistent. It would happen every evening for about 2 hours and would go away. I didn't progress very much with him, maybe 3.5 cms.

  • Thanks ladies. I was thinking these contractions felt so real, but didn't know if i was being a baby or imagining it. I am not glad you went through it, but it makes me feel better that others have dealt with it. I don't mind being overdue I actually am pretty patient, but I don't think extra labor is very fair!

  • I've had it with all three babies, too. It blows. :( Doubly so when you've got prodomal labor over due.

  • I've had it for weeks with the last 3.  It was the last five weeks for #4.

Taking a warm bath and then lying down always made them go away.  If I was having a particularly "contracty" night and was confused about whether or not it was the real thing, a bath would always let me know for sure.

Also, the more time I spent on my feet that day, the worse it was, so spend a lot of time with your feet up if you don't want to deal with it!

Hang in there!  You're almost done!

  • Great thanks ladies! I attempted my first bath in the new house- it's an old house so we are working through the projects slowly. There was not enough hot water to fill the bath because i had washed diapers then the drain leaked so the tub was half empty 5 minutes into the bath...as a result I took a half empty cold bath. My contractions did not let up... Guess we will stick to hot showers for now!
