Allergy Testing

DD has a non itchy rash that won't quit no matter what I try so we have an appointment with an allergy specialist next week. All I know is that I will get a questionaire and we will be there for up to 3 hours.

What should I expect? Do I need a notion of what to have them test for or do they look for all the common things? Is a skin or blood test my choice or will they tell me what is better? Or do both? Are they ever inconclusive?

Sorry if this is a "let me google that for you" or "call the doc and ask" moment. I just want to be prepared to help get this mystery solved. Give me your anecdotes please.

Re: Allergy Testing

  • When we took C in, we knew she had reacted to brownie batter so we knew the limited things it could be. He also tested for wheat because I have that allergy. She had a skin prick test and dealt with it like a champ. We were also told three hours and were there for less than one. We discussed with the doctor, got the skin pricks, sat in the waiting room and distracted her, the nurse read thebrwsukts and we got a list of what to avoid. Smalls they do the test on their back, older/bigger kids get it on their arms.
    Good luck!

  • Has your DD been taking any allergy medication? If so, you'll want to call the doc and ask how many days in advance do they want her taken off the allergy medication. I have to cut DS and myself off the medication 14 days before the appointment. DS and I have only ever had the test done on our backs. It doesn't hurt when they do the skin pricks, but it can get a little uncomfortable if your skin starts to react to the test. The control solution that they inject to make sure the test works is the most uncomfortable for me, the rest is a breeze.

  • She's not taking any allergy meds now so we're ok there. We've just been trying non steroid topical treatments and a elimination type diet already. Thank you for all this detail, I am more hopeful now we'll have a successful appointment.

  • Our LO had a patch of eczema form a food allergy when she was younger but thankfully it went away. We ended up using a zippy sack for her to sleep in so she wouldn't scratch it but she loved it so she still sleeps in it. Hope the allergist gets to the bottom of it!
