my boobs don't work & LO isn't handling soy well

On FB too (sorry for the repeat)

I'll try to keep this as short as possible cuz it's kind of a long story. My diet's been inadequate the last ~2 months, I've lost a lot of weight, and my body seems to have decided it isn't going to make milk anymore. My boobs are back to being small and feeling like they did pre-lactation, don't swell if I don't nurse for a period of time, etc.

I didn't plan or want to wean. I'm still offering to nurse, but my previously boob-obsessed LO is mostly refusing. She can be convinced to nurse only about 2x a day for the last few days. And when she does, she's frequently biting my nipples, tugging, and shaking her head--I assume because she's not getting much. I tried pumping and with breast massage and with a lot of time spent, I got <2 oz.

I would be sad but not terribly upset about weaning except that LO's not handling the BM to soy milk transition very well. We chose soy because cow's milk on the island is a bit sketchy and goes bad before date often, which makes me concerned about bacterial load. Anyway, in the last 24 hrs she's had 2x diarrhea but some normal stool in between and 2x vomiting. She's refusing the soy milk now, and although I'm offering her my boobs, I don't think they're getting her much nutrition. We have only ~12 oz of frozen BM left too :(

I asked DH to feed her only the frozen BM and usual solids today and pick up some WCM so maybe I have something to give her tonight. I don't know if the trouble is transitioning from BM to something else, or if it's a sensitivity to soy, or a virus...? Anyone else have trouble with the transition away from BM? Words of wisdom (besides eat more which it's probably too late for that to fix this problem)?

Re: my boobs don't work & LO isn't handling soy well

  • Can u try offering other high fat foods instead of milk, like cheese, avocado or nut butters?

Also.. If it makes you feels any better my supply tanked also recently and I have made no changes to my diet ( I literally eat enough for two people). I think our bodies know our LO s are getting older and do not need as much BM.

  • Did you go straight soy or a BM/soy mix? I would try a mix with a gradual increase of either WCM or soy whichever you choose.

  • i'd quit the soy, and try other milks for at least temporarily and see if it improves. she might not tolerate the soy overload.

  • Would formula be an option until you get off the island?

I would suggest WCM-based formula for te next few weeks. Lots of babies have trouble with soy, and at least you can control the quality with formula.

    Eta: ksimo already suggested this.
  • Also, it may not be too late to save your supply if that is what you want- it won't hurt to try. I recently had food poisoning on top of low-supply from AF and after chugging tons of fluid and eating oatmeal and lactation cookies, my supply rebounded fine.
@crunchymama11 Thanks for the advice. We can get almond milk and sometimes coconut milk too. I've been offering to nurse her as often as possible in the hopes that'd help, but she's mostly refusing to nurse and just biting me instead.

I had planned to BF longer and I feel sad at the prospect of giving up. I don't want to give up that snuggle time--it's the only time she ever holds still!

But truth be told, nursing is probably a stress on my body right now that would be better removed. Then I also have more options as far as medication too, and... well, it might be needed.
