TV/No TV

So I'm a newbie on the boards and I've been searching for a thread on raising kids without a tv in the home. My wife and I haven't had a tv at home for 3 years. Now that we're pregnant I'm worried about how people do it without the tv. I'd love to hear your stories or advice!

  • I lived without TV before kids for a couple years. I now have kids. And several TVs.

However, I don't think it's unrealistic to not want a tv. If it's not a part of your lifestyle now it doesn't have to be when you have a kid. You make it work. Good luck.
  • Are you asking if it's possible to parent without TV? Of course. I know people both IRL and online that don't do screen time for their kids.

We do everything in moderation. IME, kids don't really have the attention span for TV until closer to 2y. Reassess at that point if you must. But worrying about it now is premature.

  • Lurker, but a question, do you just not have a physical TV but still watch/stream stuff from Amazon/Netflix/Hulu? Or do you not watch any shows/movies at all? I think there's a difference between 'we do not watch TV' and 'we do not watch TV on a TV.' I know lots of people who let their kids watch kids shows that are available online. But if you don't have a TV and don't watch shows, then, I think just keep doing what you're doing if it's working for you.

Possible UO (big day for me on Parenting, I guess): If you have Hulu/Amazon Prime/Netflix/HBOgo/whatever else has come out and you watch it on a tablet or computer, you watch what is basically TV. Not owning a TV doesn't mean you're not watching it. You can both not own and not watch, but I find most people I meet now who say 'Oh, we don't watch TV' are the same people who love Netflix and OITNB and House of Cards. You're still watching TV shows.

  • You probably should have lurked longer before posting.

Can we debate electronic and toys with flashing lights next?
    Yes, can we?

Give my kids all the noisy, bright, obnoxious toys. They love them ALMOST as much as the TV/iPad.

Can we talk about DD who sings every lyric (minus the curses) to "All About that Bass?", cause I'm assuming this thread will head down the "you're poisoning your kids' brain" trail and this seems to fit.
  • My BFF and her DH have a 7 year old DD, and they have never had a TV. With that said, they do sit and watch a lot of tv shows on their respective laptops.

  • I knew this would grab some snark and some good things to think through. We currently don't have a tv or subscriptions to the netflix/hulu things. Thanks for the link to the formal group too!
  • this thread is weird.
  • You sounds like you really care about your little one and are already thinking about what will be the best for them! When I was growing up, my parents did not have a TV. As a result I feel that I am much closer to my sisters than I would have been, had we spent most of our time watching TV. However, my DH and I do have a TV. Here is a link to an article that has some helpful suggestions on how to regulate TV with children. Hope this helps! https://bit.ly/ZOZtoH
