I don't mean to sound controversial
My DD is 5 months old and she's not gaining weight as fast as she should be (she has been falling in percentiles and has weighed the same 13lbs 12oz for over a week). I have plenty of milk, the issue is that she doesn't seem to be too interested in nursing during the day. She'll eat for 2 minutes and then start arching her back OR she falls asleep at the breast. The only time she actually eats well is at night (she wakes up 2-3 times to nurse). I tried giving her a supplemental bottle during the day, but most of the time, she just doesn't want it.
Anything I can do to help her eat more? Are any of you experiencing this?
Re: Can I get my baby to drink more milk?
I agree with PP - 5m was a big distraction time for us, and DD also seemed to "snack" a lot more.
And I know the percentiles can be worrisome, but is she in a growth spurt? DD has a tendency to get longer, and then fill out (for example, from 12-15m, she grew 3", but gained only 7oz). Finally, double check that you doctor is using the breastfed baby growth charts when plotting your percentiles. (I ask this because a quick check on the WHO website puts her in about the 20th percentile - not sure where she was before).
Also, this is going to sound silly, but sometimes when DD was in a really distractable time, taking a few hours to chill out with her in my bed, shirtless, helped kind of reset the clock and get her interested and focused on nursing. Kind of th same deal as skin-to-skin with a newborn - just lots of cuddles, with the option to nurse.
