Thoughts on seafood...

What guidelines are you following on safe consumption of seafood per week?

It got me thinking because I had a tuna noodle casserole Monday night and we are planning on having shrimp stirfry tonight. Then on Saturday we are planning on going out and the place we go to
I always order crabcake. I know I am probably being a bit nuts but I'm starting to think that maybe it is too much seafood in one week. Thoughts?

  • I stick to once a week on fish and avoid shellfish completely. That's probably on the conservative side, though.

  • I love seafood but I try to keep it to these guidelines (taken from whattoexpect.com).  I'm sure you'll be fine if you go with the shrimp + crabcakes (OMG crabcakes sound soooo good)

    the FDA recommends eating 8 to 12 ounces (two average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are low in mercury

  • Do some googling. They actually divide seafood into three categories for pregnant women. Clearly look for some more details but unless you live near a coast and have a really nice supply of seafood, most of the common stuff is okay in moderation.

  • Thank you ladies! I was out and about when I posted and now am googling it all. It seems like crab and shrimp are in the "low" category, so I feel better. Never got this far along before so it was never really a question.

  • I tried to do 2 servings per week, mainly stuff like salmon, flounder, and shrimp. Every now and then tuna or other kinds, but limited and still 2 total servings. I felt pretty comfortable with that. H and I are vegetarian minus occasional fish so I definitely wanted to keep eating it as a protein option.
