Maternity leave decisions

I'm 20 weeks today with my first child (it's a girl!) I recently started a new job in july before finding out I was pregnant. I work in the returns department of a large furniture company. I wouldn't mind working until my due date since I will not get paid leave but since moving furniture is apart of my job I'm afraid I'll have to leave earlier for mine and baby's safety. I'm debating on looking for another job but I truly enjoy my job and am not ready to give it up especially with me receiving great pay. Any mom's experiencing this situation?

Re: Maternity leave decisions

  • Is there maybe different things they could have you do besides move furniture? Or is that out of the question? I'm in a position where luckily I don't have heavy lifting, but I also won't receive paid leave. I stand all day and I'm already getting tired, idk how close to my due date I'm gonna make it lol, but I'm going to try. Good luck with what you choose to do, but it might be a little tough to find a new job altogether, I'm not sure xoxo

  • Some doctors will impose a lifting limit if you ask them to. Mine did for my last job, but that's a kettle of shit we don't need to go into.

You should be able to continue doing all activities you're used to, but as pp have said, talk to your doctor. Then, if you need accommodations, talk to your boss. If your doctor writes you a note, your job must legally comply. But that can be harder to enforce than you would think and can lead to bad blood if you have to push them. I'd encourage honest dialogue.
  • I don't move furniture for a living but i drive and am in my car for 8+ hours a day. In relation to what you have said, my doctor doesn't think it would be to safe to be in my car for that long a period of time. He doesn't want me going into labor while I'm driving. Anyway so during like the last month or so of my pregnancy im gonna transition to a different position that doesn't require me to be in my car. Maybe you can talk to someone at your work to see if that would be a possibility just until after you come back from your ML. If you talk to then now i feel like its enough of a notice that they should maybe be able to find you something else temporary as well as someone to fill your position for the time being. Good luck :-)

  • Maybe you should talk to your HR rep/Benefits manager if your company has one. I got a lot of info from mine. Also check state laws. California has FMLA options that allow you to take off a few weeks before your due date if needed.
  • I am supposed to lift things in my job, when I try to lift them after I am in agony. My job is really understanding,so they don't want me to lift heavy things anymore. Maybe just have a talk with your boss.
  • They should be able to put you on modified work - check the OSHA requirements for your state and see what options they are required to give you. fMLA may not apply since you have only been there a short time
  • This is a tough situation. FMLA won't apply since you haven't been there long enough. Do check with your HR department but I'm not sure they HAVE to find different job duties for you. The doctor can write a note requesting moderate duties and employers are supposed to make reasonable accommodations if they can but they're not required to create a brand new job for you if they don't have the need. I would talk to your doctor and find out if he/she sees a reason why you can't continue to do these duties. If he he/she says you need to stop, talk to HR and your supervisor. Hopefully there are some accomodations they can make for you during this time. Best wishes!!!
