Are you afraid?

...of an Ebola outbreak?!?

A week or two ago, one of my partner teachers was telling us how afraid she is of an Ebola outbreak. I kinda laughed about it and thought she was silly.

Well, fast forward a week and it's starting to spread. I began to get a little worried. Then, I talked to my DH about it at dinner last night, and now I'm getting myself all freaked out. He went to the dr yesterday, and apparently his doctor was really concerned. He said that if the wealth care workers don't even know how to protect themselves from it, that we're in trouble. Also, since he's a pilot, my DH is worried about getting it at the airport and bringing it home to us.

Anyways, now he's talking about trying to stock up on food and put aside a chunk of cash.

A long story short, I'm starting to freak a little bit. I wanted to get your opinions and see if I was just letting my anxiety run wild!

  • I'm not worried at all. I think the media is creating mass hysteria, and that people don't take the time to know that it is more likely that we will have another flu pandemic than an Ebola one. And I'm with @mishy2006 I'm getting ready to start hiding people from my facebook feed because of this.

  • I'm not worried about it but I guess if I traveled more or went outside my bubble more it might be more on my mind, even then though, I doubt I'd be freaking out about it.
  • I'm not too worried about it. I am aware but don't feel it's escalated to be something to plan for or worry about.

  • I have a good amount of fear because I am a healthcare professional and I work in Dallas. It was just fate that the original patient didn't walk into our ER. I also don't think people were quarantined appropriately, so there is a lot of risk for exposure. Most of my co-workers are also fearful, but maybe that is because we might be exposed through patient contact.

I am more worried about the flu and enteovirus, but I am definitely disillusioned by the CDC and don't have very much confidence in them now. I do think they are to blame for what happened in Dallas and I am pretty shocked that there are not tighter travel restrictions from the epicenters in West Africa. I am trying to be much more vigilent about hand washing in general especially when traveling.

  • I am not worried at all but I do think it should have been handled better and with more common sense. I am more concerned about Enterovirus 68 and the flu. The amount of people infected with Ebola pales in comparison to the amount of people affected by other diseases that present just as much danger.

  • I'm not personally worried about my family contracting it, like I am with the Enterovirus, but I probably wouldn't make travel plans right now that were not absolutely necessary.

  • I fly a decent amount and the amount of people wearing masks or other protective gear does make me a little nervous, not for fear of getting sick but just for dealing with them and then the other people they make nervous. On my flight on Friday a woman was wearing a mask and a man came up to her to tell her that Ebola wasn't airborne. She explained to him that she had a weakened immune system and this was so she didn't catch flu or another airborne disease. I gave her props for basically telling him to STFU. I'm happy to hear the most high risk people like the Dallas patient's immediate family, who were exposed to him when he was contagious, are hitting the end of the 21 day watch period and are symptom free. Hopefully these last health care workers will be the only ones and after a month or so the US will also be declared Ebola free.
  • Nope. I'm in the camp of thinking that the media spreads fear like wild fire. It's not as easy to "catch" like they're saying. When this is over they'll just find something else to get us all worried about

  • Ordinarily no, but I don't like the thought of using international airports and I will be using one soon. I just visualise so many people not washing their hands, touching everywhere, coughing and spluttering. I would be lying if I said it didn't make me feel icky and nervous.

  • I'm not worried. I know how Ebola is spread and using science to not get me worked up like the media is trying.

I, too, have become annoyed with those on Facebook spreading 'facts'. One person is scared to deliver in a hospital while another wants to wear masks so they won't get Ebola. (For reference, I am in Wisconsin.)
