NBR: Your holy grail foundation?

I got a Sephora gift card for my birthday earlier this month, and am researching different foundations on their website. I'm looking to try something different, and need medium to full coverage that lasts. I have an oily t-zone and acne scars on my chin, so I want something that keeps me looking matte but also covers the redness on my face.

I got a sample of MUFE HD that I'm currently trying out, but I don't feel like it does a good enough job of masking the red. Maybe I'm not layering it on enough? Past favorites of mine were Lancome's Teint Miracle (still love that, but the finish is pretty dewy and I want something more matte), and BareMinerals Ready foundation. I loved the BM Ready a lot at first, but it does go on pretty cakey and just seems to sit heavily on my skin when I use it. Like, if I scratch my cheek, I suddenly have a fingertip covered in foundation.  :|

Anyway, what's your HG foundation, if you're lucky enough to have found it?

  • I use the bare minerals ready foundation, but it looks like you have already ruled that one out.

  • Have you tried using a BB creme and then dusting some mineral powder over it? The BB creme will be tinted to provide coverage (and moisture) and then using the powder over it will help cover and set it.

Do you have any of the cakeyness issues with it? Maybe I'm using too much product or just not blending it well enough.

I love makeup! I really like Hourglass Immaculate foundation with the Vail primer. Gives me a great flawless matte look.

Mac studio fix fluid is great for me as well but not sold at sephora.

I think it's easy to put too much on and I also do not love the tinted ready mineral veil. I think it's the tinted mineral veil that was giving me the cakey look. Are you using the tinted ready mineral veil?

  • I have similar issues. My go to is tinted moisturizer (Laura Mercier), and set with MAC mineral powder.

For evening events or when I need a ton of coverage, ditto the rec for MAC studio fix although as mentioned, not sold at Sephora.

  • I too have redness all the time! I use make up forever hd foundation.. with the bm matte powder if I'm extra red. Blends well & no cakey look to it at all

The great thing about Sephora is that you can go into the store and have someone try different things on you. Maybe that's an option? Ask one of their experts?

I use boring Neutrogena foundation but I don't use very much. I'm all about eye make up.

This!! This is actually exactly what I did to find the right products that work for my skin tone!
  • Clinique "even better" foundation. It's one or the only ones that I feel doesn't make me look cakes and fake, or cause me to breakout.

  • You can get Clinique to do your make up for free w an appointment and that can help you figure out what would work best w hiding the red blemishes.
  • Laura Mercier silk creme foundation for heavier coverage and tinted moisturizer for lighter coverage.  Also love her secret camouflage concealer.
