Pregnant IMMEDIATELY after stopping birth control!

Hi!  I am new to this site and just found out I am pregnant last week!  I got off of birth control (Loestrin) right before my wedding day on 09/13/14 and never had a first period so I didn't think I had ovulated yet..  My husband and I started trying on my honeymoon and I had symptoms 2 weeks later.  I'm still in shock it happened this quick on my first pregnancy!  I have heard from people that it's more risky to get pregnant immediately after stopping birth control??  Is this true?? Are there any other risks I will face that you know of getting pregnant immediately off birth control?  I'm about 5- 6 weeks along right now..  I think...  Since I never even had a period...PRAYING FOR A HEALTHY PREGNANCY!

Re: Pregnant IMMEDIATELY after stopping birth control!

  • Congrats!

That happened to me with my 2nd... In fact I found out so quick it's debatable that I even was off the pill when I conceived!

Didn't seem to be of any concern to my health care provider. And I think my 2nd is a pretty great kid :)
  • Someone once told me that you're particularly fertile after stopping birth control but I'm not sure if it's true or not. And if it is I'm not sure how.

I've never heard anything about it being more risky and I don't see how it could be. As for getting KU so quickly, my BFF was going to stop her pill anticipating that it would take her a while to get KU but her gyno told her that, in her experience, women who are on the pill and then go off of it to start TTC often get KU very quickly (which is exactly what ended up happening with BFF).

EDIT: And CONGRATS!! (Sorry, meant to lead with that. Is pregnancy brain a real thing 7 1/2 weeks in? Because if so, I blame that.)

Hi! I was married the same day and stopped my BC too (just on it to regulate period) and walah! I haven't heard anything about the risk of getting pregnant after stopping BC though.

    Welcome!

  • It's happened to a couple of people I know.  I got pregnant on cycle 2 after stopping both times.  My dr had told me that it was riskier because the hormones maybe weren't completely regulated but everyone I know has had healthy pregnancies so I wouldn't worry too much.  Congratulations!

  • this is exactly what happened to me. I stopped taking my birth control and got my last period on 9/21...had a preconception appointment within maybe like two weeks of that and then literally two weeks from the day of that appointment, got a positive test. I was SHOCKED. And also thankful that I never went off my birth control early, like some people advise you to to get your cycles normalized.
  • Welcome & congrats!!!
  • Thank you for all of your replies!!  It's really great to have women who are expecting the same time as I am!!  I feel so much better already!!
  • There is a slight risk because birth control thins the lining of your uteus making it a little more difficult for a baby to "stick" but after about week 9 or 10 I am sure there is no longer any risk "for this reason in particular". I got off b/c with my son and the doc told me to wait 1-2 cycles before conceiving to let the uterus thicken, I had 1 cycle and then boom... pregnant. You will be just fine!
  • I only had one cycle before getting pregnant after being on the pill for 10 1/2 years so I was also shocked. At my pregnancy confirmation appointment, my doctor didn't seem concerned but wanted an early ultrasound in week 7 for dating. Everything was perfect on Monday, so I hope it goes the same for you!

  • It happened to me also! Much quicker than I expected but we are thrilled. I haven't heard anything about being higher risk. It's just trickier to determine time of conception. I was 2 weeks behind what we thought according to my LMP. I just ovulated late. The doctor didn't seem concerned at all. Congratulations.

  • That happened to me too right after BC. My "period" that comes during your placebo pills started on Sept 1st and I got my BFP on Sept 29, after stopping the BCP. I'm going for my ultrasound on Nov 4th so we will see how far off my "predictions" of my LMP are.
I'm not too worried at this point. I'm just anxious to get the ultrasound!

  • Congrats! FWIW, the title of your thread may rub some of us not-so-fertile-myrtles the wrong way. I for one, was off BC for a year before we started trying, and it took us 16 months to conceive after we started trying (with lots of meds I might add). I'm glad you didn't have to go through it, but just seeing the title, especially with immediately called out, was like "ehh.. really?"

Just my two cents. Again, congrats!! H&H 9 months.

  • First pregnancy here and thanks for starting this thread. First day of my last "period" was 9/6 which was a couple days after removing my Nuvaring. Didn't put a new one in and got a BFP on 10/3. At my preconception appt, my doc gave me no cause for concern. First appointment and ultrasound is 11/3 at what I think to be just over 8 weeks. Cautiously excited. Hope all is well in there!

I got pregnant during my second cycle after stopping the pill. I was not prepared for it to happen so soon either! My doc said the stories about it not being safe to conceive while just off bc are outdated and there's not enough data to back them up. But this was in regards to the pill (tri-lo) so I can't really speak on behalf of other methods. I'm sure everything is fine. Congrats to you!
And @hilgspritch we probably have close to the same due date :) my last was 9/6 too, tested 10/6 and first appt is 11/3! Good luck!!
  • Whether it's safe or not depends on the type of birth control and how your body responded but usually it's safe. My bets are on you having a girl!!!

Just wanted to add to what @loveinkw13 said. Truly, congratulations on your pregnancy! Just be sensitive about the fact that this board has all types of people with many different journeys to getting here, so you may want to think twice about how you word things. The ladies on here who have struggled in various ways to get and stay pregnant are probably giving your post title the side eye. Some might not have even opened it due to the title/tone.

Some people might say I get pregnant "easily," but since starting to try for baby #2, I've had a hard time holding on to pregnancies (this is my 4th pregnancy in the last year--the prior 3 ended in miscarriage). With my son, I got pregnant quickly and had no issues with my pregnancy, so I was not as sensitive to the struggles of others. Not to be a Debbie Downer. Just want to promote awareness about the diverse make-up of the board.

  • I went off the pill in August in preparation to start trying to get pregnant. My last cycle started on 9/23 while on vacation. In now just over 4 weeks along.
