Haunted Houses and Pregnant Women...

... yay or nay?

I'm not sure if a haunted house is a good idea for a pregnant woman.

Is there any difinitive research for or against pregnancy + costumed men chasing you with a chainsaw?

I'm kinda bummed thinking I'll miss out on the yearly tradition.

They're probably safe for the most part, just don't do what I did last year. I wasn't pregnant at the time but I got scared (as intended) but then I tripped, fell down and was trampled by the horde of screaming pre-teen girls who were also terrified and trying to get to the exit.
I wasn't hurt very badly at all but stupid things do happen occasionally. It's mostly just embarrassing now but who knows. If I had been pregnant it could have been a bigger deal.

  • I'm not going this year, simply because the risk of getting scared and running into someone/something or falling over is always there. (I used to work at haunted attractions, Fright Fest, haunted houses as one of the scary actors, so I've seen all kinds of chaos). I'm not worried so much that I'll freak out and run into a wall since I usually get startled and then laugh, but I don't need some scared person knocking me over or tripping me by mistake or something.

That said, I highly doubt there is any research on this, but I do know that many haunted attractions do have disclaimers about if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, etc.
  • We go to Halloween Horror Nights here in Orlando yearly, they have big no pregnant woman disclaimers in the houses and most of the event. I called my Dr before I saw the signs online and she told me it probably isn't a good idea, the fall risk is really high because you're in the dark so much and you don't know what you will fall into.

  • My only concern would be getting through the super tight spaces our local haunted house always has in the beginning to make you feel claustrophobic. Other than that, I have no qualms.
  • If you're like me and get really scared in those types of things it's probably not a good idea. Aside from the risk of falling, getting run into, or running into something, all that adrenaline from being freaked out seems bad.
  • I was really considering going and actually contemplated this idea too truly the only risk that i thought of before was the being overly scared part i really didn't take into consideration the tripping and falling part until now but we prob won't end up going. SO didn't really want me to go anyway but i was the one for it. @bakingmama123‌ i grew up in Tampa and went to that every year now im in Maryland and miss it and hal-o-scream at Busch Gardens too :(

  • I just recently went to fright fest in maryland and New Jersey. I could have easily tripped from all the jumping and freaking out I did. Luckily my FI held me up the entire time. Unless you fall or get trampled, I don't see much harm. Ever since my bleeding incident I won't be going to any more haunted attractions this year. I don't want to worsen anything.

I don't know why but this post cracks me up. @MalVough‌ google mckamey manor. It is like the most insane and hilarious haunted house where the actors actually attack you and lock you in cages and shit, and it takes 3 hours to get through.

Ok, THAT is too much! Almost as bad as the naked haunted house that attempted to launch last year in my area of Pa. *cringes*

  • Went to one last weekend. They don't scare me at all so no panic worries here. I was more concerned with the fact that I had to stand in line for 4 hours.
  • Mostly I'd be afraid of peeing my pants, so no...

Yup I went to one this past weekend and laughed so hard I peed
  • I think the risk of falling or someone knocking you down in the dark is the big concern, just like pp's have said. Heck, since my belly is getting bigger I've noticed myself cringing just walking through the halls at the schools where I work because of the constant bumping and jarring by the kids. I definitely wouldn't want to risk being in the tight spaces/dark with a bunch of grown, possibly intoxicated, strangers.

Most of the ones near me won't allow pregnant women to go through them, although I guess many of our members are still at a point where they could hide it.
  • It's a haunted house. There will be haunted houses next year, along with alcohol, roller coasters, mountains to climb etc.. Perhaps take a year off from risky experiences. You have many years to enjoy them later.

  • I'm not going because I think about the people around me who get scared and flail their arms around or jump back and could elbow me in the stomach or knock me down. Just not worth the risk of hurting yourself or baby if hit hard enough.

And as for mackamey manor, fuck that shit. Idk how that's even legal! My friend and I were watching their trailer... How would anyone come out of that sane? The actors in that must really be fucked in the head to be able to do that to people. :shudders:
  • Totally went to a haunted ship this year and LOVED IT!  I'm not visibly pregnant so we decided to just go during a slower time (right at 6PM when the thing opened) so there wouldn't be crazy crowds.  Getting pushed/trampled would be my biggest concern for a pregnant woman in a haunted house type thing, so if there's a time where there are less people, go then.  We had no one ahead of us and only a small group of very polite teenagers behind us.

I didn't experience any contractions from being scared or anything, so I wouldn't be concerned about that!  Unless of course you're already high risk.

The ship I went on had this!  It was a maze type thing with tall black walls so you literally can't see a thing.  And to mess with you more it gets narrower during the first turn.  And it went on FOREVER!  Whoever came up with that idea is a genius.  I love the psychological scares over the "boo" type scares.

  • I'd have to go with no for all the reasons already stated. Plus I just don't want to be in that kind of atmosphere while pregnant. I (personally) don't feel it's good for the baby. But even if you feel the scare/gore factor is NBD i think the risk of falling or getting hit is the compelling reason not to go.

  • I can't handle haunted houses even not pregnant.  I always tell myself, bah, this will be a laugh, and I then I practically have a heart attack.  If I really wanted to go while pregnant, though, I would.
  • I wouldn't go, but I'm not really into that kind of thing anyway. If there's any chance of getting pushed or falling down (like in some of the crazy haunted houses I've seen) I just don't think it's worth the risk. I don't know how I'd forgive myself if something happened and I could've easily avoided it.

  • This weekend, I plan on going to the same haunted woods thinger that we go to every other year.  I don't scare easily (sadly), and this particular venue sends groups in separately with a pretty decent buffer.  So I'm not worried about getting knocked down or trampled either.

Honestly, being in traffic is a much bigger threat to me in regards to stress to the ol' ticker and bodily harm.

Ugh, for real!  I don't even have a long commute to work (all of two blocks), but whenever I try to leave town I get stuck in stupid construction traffic that has the highway lose to one lane in three places.  It's the most annoying and stressful thing and I'm just waiting for the day I get rear ended by someone who doesn't see the stop is coming up and can't slow down soon enough.  The haunted house I went to was NBD in comparison to that BS.  Never did I feel unsafe, like I would trip or be trampled.

Also walking outside in a few months is going to get nice and interesting.  I'm not really looking forward to trying to navigate icy sidewalks!

  • I don't scare easily- I'm more jumpy in haunted houses- but last year we went to knotts Halloween haunt and some guy walked out of the shadows when we first got there and scared the shit out of me!! I have a heart condition and I had to sit down because I was shaky and my heart wouldn't stop pounding- which never usually happens. So for that reason alone I will be sadly avoiding any haunted houses this year in case someone decides to do that again!

  • My vote is no.
  • I would probably say no. My mom went to one when she was pregnant with me and it caused her to go in to premature labor. I was born 3 weeks early. So i think it would be a bad idea! Wouldnt want anything like that to happen..
  • This kinda falls into the unnecessary risk category for me. But, then again I drink a glass of wine here and there and many feel that is an unnecessary risk. I think you make a judgement based on how you handle things and also the environment... (Are you likely to be trampled, fall, etc.) Hopefully you make a choice with no negative consequences.
