Question about Rockers/Gliders

I was wondering what everyone's options on rockers/gliders are. What are some features that you have that you loved/didn't like/wish you had. Is one better than the other in terms of rocker vs. glider. I start looking but have no idea what I should really be looking for. Thank you in advance!

Re: Question about Rockers/Gliders

  • This is my question, too! I sat in one for a s while at Buy Buy Baby yesterday, and it was super comfy at the beginning, then got really uncomfotable!

So when toy find one you like, and are planning to buy, I'd suggest sitting for 30mins or more.

@chaysefaith‌ Do you know which brand you got? (Or where it was from)

And where are good places to try out various chairs?

  • I really like my glider. It has a nice smooth motion, comfortable to sit in for a long time and easy to get out of while holding the baby. I have the matching ottoman also. I went to BRU and sat in/rocked in all of the displays until I found one that I liked. Then I searched around until I found it at a good price.

  • I decided on a lazy-boy recliner/rocker and I still love it. The gliders I tried out just didn't cut it comfort wise. Just my 2 cents.
  • I have absolutely no input but am following this thread because I have the same question. Thanks!

I have tested this one in a store and love it. clicky

It will cost about $650 if I remember correctly.  I decided on a glider over a rocker because it requires less effort to move.  I also wanted one that could possibly be moved out of a nursery one day and not look like an obvious nursery chair.  This particular brand can be customized with the fabric too through the store that I'll be ordering it from.

ETA  My requirements for a glider included a back high enough that my husband and I could rest our heads against and additionally the wingback style to rest my head against too.  I also didn't want something with arms that were too high which would make nursing uncomfortable.  This chair is literally perfect and so comfy.
I decided on a glider for those exact same reasons and had a different fabric put on mine for an additional 50 dollars. Worth it in my opinion since they had the exact same fabric as my upstairs furniture, that way if I don't need it in the nursery anymore it can mosey on out to the living room and still work great.
I also agree with PPs on sitting in it for a while! I changed my mind on a couple after a good, long sit. Just do what I did, pack some snacks and hang out for a bit :)
One last thing, I read a handful of reviews online about less expensive gliders undersides being made of plastic and breaking as a result. I opted for one with no plastic, all wood after considering SO's track record of breaking furniture.

  • @katydid2014‌ wow that does look great but 650$ night be a little high for me!

Did you or anyone else find one that you liked that was on the lower price end like maybe under 300$ or is that an unreasonable expectation? Lol I have never bought one so I have no clue on the prices of them. Didn't know if maybe the 650$ was the upgraded super dooper great model or if that was about average? Lol

  • LOVE our glider/ ottoman.  Spent many a night/ early morning in there during the early days.  That being said, I'd recommend splurging for a good, comfy one.  We have one by Best Home Furniture - their Storytime line, Braxton style, in a grey upholstery.  It was probably $800ish w/ the ottoman and worth every.single.penny.

We did the same. The arms are wide enough to set things like rags and remotes and phones on & having those things close is important when your exhausted :) .

  • Getting a recliner or la-z-boy was recommended to me for the simple fact of being able to lay down and/or sleep if needed in baby's room. The gliders are cute, but you can't lay down in them.

  • We got a Little Castle rocker/recliner and I loved it. I don't know how we would have survived without it. Find something that is not only comfortable, but that you could potentially fall asleep in, because I can't tell you the countless nights in the first few months when I was in that thing for hours in the middle of the night. Although looking back, I'd find a recliner that had a smoother/easier opening mechanism. Ours is a PITA to open (because vanity took over and I wanted a hidden handle), and it springs open hard. I ended up getting a poof and using that a lot more than opening up the recliner part.

  • I contemplated going the recliner route too but our baby's room just isn't really big enough.  La-z-boy recliners have a pretty large footprint and I wanted something smaller for the nursery.  Just something else to keep in mind when shopping.
Space is an issue for me too. Choosing the right chair will be tough for me.

  • Thank you everyone for the great insight!! I have some shopping and sitting to do :)

We got a rocker/recliner from American Signature that also has a massager in it! :)
It's super comfy, much smaller than a lazy boy, and only cost $285. DD is 18 mos and we still rock her to sleep in it every night. So satisfied! And I like the fact that when were done with using it for babies it can go in our living room or basement man cave.

ETA - I found it, here's a link. It's now $299 (we must have got it on sale)

    https://m.americansignaturefurniture.com/living-room-furniture/upholstery/recliners-rockers/atlantic-massage-rocker-recliner/1582706.aspx

They only have burgundy, taupe, and chocolate. We had espresso furniture and light walls so the chocolate was perfect.

  • Oh wow @rm2013, DH would be so annoyed if this was in the baby's room and not in front of the big screen TV. Looks so comfy, and not super huge!

  • I personally don't like the wood&fabric rocker style gliders, look too "baby" IMO, we are getting a dutailier that is $1200 on sale. In the nursery we don't have room for one with an ottoman so we got one with a footrest and the one we have picked out will look nice in our living room later.

  • Where is your wingback from? Looks like the one I was looking at pb kids but a little less expensive.
  • Definitely recommend spending the money on a glider that will last and stay comfy, and I loved having an ottoman to go with it. I used a gliding ottoman, which was great because I didn't have to work to stay in motion all the time. I personally don't like the ones with all the exposed wood parts because kids get toys stuck in/under there and reach in, which makes me nervous. Mid-range prices seem to be around $600, but I'm sure second hand stores and places like craigslist have some that could just be reupholstered!
  • The only advice I have is avoid the cheaper wood and fabric gliders. We had a super old one that we replaced for DD at about 6 months. After 1 year and nightly/heavy use it squeaks all the time. So now we need another chair for this time around. This time we're going with a lazy boy type and we can move it to the living room when we don't need it in kids room.
  • We bought a recliner and plan to move it to our room after we are done with babies. I love it and it is super comfy and big enough to use arm rests, etc. I just didn't know what I would do with a glider after babies. I guess give it away, I couldn't find use anywhere else in our home for a glider.

  • I didn't think it was something we needed, but some friends have warned us that we might want at least some kind of new chair for nursing because our sofa has really low arms and is very deep for getting in and out of.  We don't have any armchairs in our apartment.
The ones I really like from an aesthetic point of view are spend - and honestly, not
that comfortable. Some of them don't fit my long legs very well, either.  We've tried quite a few, and they're just ok.  If I'm spending more than $500, I want it to feel like heaven :).  (We are being given a lot of stuff by generous friends and so we could splurge on the chair if we want to).

I love the idea of a La-Z-Boy, but it would take up a lot of space and not really "go" with our stuff if we wanted to move it into the living room down the road.

ILs have offered us a wooden rocking chair which is lovely but I think the hard surface will not be appealing at 4:00 AM.

So…we're probably going to wait.  And if we really are desperate for one after baby is here, I'm sure at that point I won't care about aesthetics, price, or space :).

  • FTM here so thanks to everyone for the info you've shared. I had been wondering whether I really need to buy a rocker/glider. I have a chair that swivels left to right, but doesn't rock, that I planned on moving into the nursery. Does anyone think this could work or is the gliding/rocking motion really important? Money is tight so I was hoping not to have to buy one...TIA!

The movement only matters in the sense that you be comfortable with it. You don't NEED anything, realistically. It's all about ease, comfort, and the ability to fall asleep while holding a sick/hungry/fussy baby.
You're right, I don't NEED it, but posters here sure seem to love theirs so I was starting to 2nd guess my decision. As I've read on other threads, I can always wait until baby comes and then buy one if the current chair doesn't end up working. Thanks for your input!

  • Can people PIP the gliders/rockers they're talking about? Some of these sound nice but then they might not fit well in our nursery at all lol

I was sold on the PBK wingback rocker but now I'm worried it might not move as well as a glider but that's the look I want.
  • I'll be the one person who is different. I didn't have the money or the space for a nice recliner/glider. We went to Ikea and got a Poang chair (not a rocker) and ottoman. We did get it in leather so that it was easy to clean. Super comfortable, but I needed a pillow under my arm when nursing (not a big deal).

  • My mother refinished the rocker she used when I was a baby and it was the most uncomfortable thing EVER.  You are going to be spending hours at a time in whatever you choose.  I would go glider all the way.  Not sure about which brand, but I am not skimping out this time round.

  • I haven't heard of them. We actually ended up getting a PBK wingback glider for only 350$ from a store in our town that sells overstock from the big chain stores. Those normally go for around 1300$ so seeing if your town has a store like that could save you some money. But seriously, I'm loaning it to a friend and she said she wishes she had that chair when her baby was a newborn, she also said its very easy to fall asleep in if needed.
