Re: Baby Wearing Check in for the week of 10/20

  • 1. I've worn DS successfully three times.

    2. Wrap! DS falls asleep in it right away but I'm still figuring out how to get him in there correctly. I'm always worried his legs aren't in there right.

    3. I only have the Moby wrap but I think I'll be getting an Ergo for when he's a little bigger. The wrap makes us both a little warm.

    4. Not having to always use the travel system and being able to eat without having to put him down. I'm looking forward to figuring out how to nurse while he's in the wrap too.

Having issues setting up the k'tan - by clothing size I should be a small, but it feels tight. I think I'm going to order the ergo w/insert. Any thoughts on it?

    1. Have you baby worn before? I have been wearing him in the moby. He is still under 6lbs, but the wrap is working for us

    2. What have you been trying with your baby this week/ when you have your baby what will you be trying? We will stick with the moby for a while. We have an ergo too that we will use when he is bigger. I am not a fan of the ergo infant insert.

    3. What kinds of carriers have you tried and what did you like/dislike about them? I have only tried the moby and the ergo. The moby is great for when they are small to keep them snugly. I am still getting used to tying it well again. I feel like I am a sloppy wrapper. I like the ergo for when they are 4 months and older

    4. What do you like best about baby wearing? I can interact with my toddler while still cradling my newborn. My toddler will often ask if the baby can go in the moby because he then feels like all my attention is on him.

    1) yes... Started when dd#1 was 3 months!

    2) mainly just a simple Front Wrap Cross Carry since I can get him in it so quickly but its nice and tight!

    3) I have a Moby but my sister is borrowing it, 3 wovens, 3 ring slings (one is a water one and my sister is also borrowing another) and a mei tai. The MT is very uncomfortable but it was my first so I keep it around :P

    4) Being able to keep LO close while still caring for siblings. I can wear all four kids depending on the carrier!!! I often end up tandem carrying too!!

  • 1. Yes, I started out babywearing with my first and she is twelve but I really got into it more with DD#2 and and is three and a half.

    2. We used the ring sling for a bit but due to the complications I had after delivery I'm still really sore and wearing was uncomfortable. DD#3 loved it though.

    3. I'm a babywearing educator so you name it and I've probably tried it. My personal preference, especially for a newborn, are the ring sling and woven wraps. Both provide adequate support for baby's spine and good vertical support creating the boundaries LO's need. I like different carriers for different purposes and stages of development.

    4. There is so much I love about babywearing but to keep this short I'd say my favorite aspect is how content it keeps my babies. All my girls have just wanted to be held 24/7 and babywearing makes that more possible.

It should feel pretty tight, it will stretch. Ergos are great but I'm not a fan of them for little babies, a lot of babies aren't happy in them with the insert because it doesn't make them feel as secure. Maybe try a Moby? It is similar to the n k tan but completely adjustable.

Sounds like it might be a bit big for you. Try flipping the shoulder to snug it up a bit.

    Should I flip both shoulders?

  • 1& 2. Just tried C in the Mei Tai yesterday. She feel asleep quickly and stayed in it for about an hour.

    3. We also have a Boba 4g carrier that we will use once she is a bit bigger.

    4. Being able to have my hands free and provide comfort to C.

  • Ive worn DD in the Ktan a handful of times.  DH has worn DD a couple of times.

I need to vacuum so I'll do that today with her on (tried it once before and she slept fine) might even get crazy and blow dry my hair while holding her.

I use the Ktan and my husband uses the Lillebaby.  The ktan is getting easier to use (thank you Youtube) and the Lillebaby seems better for older babies but since you have to adjust the size according to who's wearing it, I consider it my husbands.

I can get stuff done around the house or take my dogs for a walk with her.  Sometimes she won't nap in her swing, but will in a wrap.

  • 1. Have you baby worn before? Yes! I've worn DS1 pretty much everywhere we went and throughout my pregnancy as well. Just haven't worn him postpartum, lol. I've worn the newbie a few times thus far.

    2. What have you been trying with your baby this week/ when you have your baby what will you be trying? We've used our ring sling at almost every outing. I also have a lender girasol woven wrap that I've been trying to get the hang of, and this morning we took a walk and I wore DS2 in the ergo with a receiving blanket rolled up under his bum.

    3. What kinds of carriers have you tried and what did you like/dislike about them?

Moby - dislike length and stretchiness, and like its snugliness
Mei Tai - love the ease of the mei tai. Really no dislikes here
Ergo - so fast and easy. DS1 outgrew it pretty quickly, though
Kinderpack - by far my favorite carrier. Most comfortable ever! Dislike that they're hard to get.
Woven wraps - there's quite the learning curve
Ring sling - quick and easy, but I feel that I have to be very attentive to DS in it, like it's a little less secure than my SSCs

    4. What do you like best about baby wearing?

I love that it enables me to leave the car seat in the car. I can do just about anything I need to do while holding baby, so I get constant snuggles and never really have to set baby down, but things still get done. I also love that it leaves me hands free for meeting DS1's needs while meeting DS2's needs at the same time!

  • @kindacrunchy Wore DS this morning (he's now just under 7.5lbs) in the ergo with a rolled up receiving blanket under his bum. His legs are short enough that they were still technically inside the carrier, but his weight was on his bum, sitting on the blanket roll, not on his feet. He fussed at first, but as soon as we were walking, he calmed down and seemed content. His head was turned sideways, cheek resting against my chest, so I know he could breathe easily. And lastly, his head was up right where I could easily kiss him.

Does this sound right? How do you feel about tiny babies in ergos? A friend who is a VBE told me that she doesn't recommend it because they're less supportive for baby's back. I just find the ergo fast and comfy, and it's been hit or miss with the ring sling for me. Sometimes I just can't get him in it straight or with properly froggied legs...

I don't usually recommend the ergo for tiny ones either since there are better options. However, I know a lot of people and their babies who are very happy using them from early on. Baby is usually a good indicator if something is off, if he doesn't feel supported he will fuss and you will know. It sounds like you are doing everything right. The head position, being close enough to kiss, and making sure the weight isn't on his feet and is on his bum.

  • I suck at threading my ring sling. Do I have to fold the material like an accordion? YouTube has not helped.
  • @LightBright515‌ ...I don't... LOL not sure I do it "right" but it's secure ;) I just thread it through (similar to a d-ring belt or a motorcycle helmet if either of those help) and then tighten it by pulling each color (it's a wrap conversion) are you near a Baby wearing group? They're awesome at helping!!!

(on a side note does 515 in your screen name mean anything? It's an area code near me ;) )

  • 1. Have you baby worn before?
Barely. I had a structured carrier and a borrowed Moby with DD and rarely used either. The carrier wasn't that comfortable for long and the Moby intimidated the hell out of me.

    2.  What have you been trying with your baby this week/ when you have your baby what will you be trying?
Just started using the Moby with DS and he seems to love it. Haven't worn him too much as I am less than a week out from my c-section. Haven't gotten out the structured carrier as he is too little.

    3.  What kinds of carriers have you tried and what did you like/dislike about them?
I love the comfort of the Moby at least with DS being a newborn. I don't like how difficult it is to get tied neatly and tightly by myself. I was looking at a mei tai to get around what I don't like about putziness of the Moby but I'm not sure. I haven't ever tried an Ergo or any expensive structured carrier. I hesitate to spend the money if I don't like it as it seems so individual. My friends that have them are using them so I don't have any to borrow.

    4.  What do you like best about baby wearing?
That I can feel close to him while still getting things done. Eases my overactive sense of Mom Guitl. He obviously loves it and conks out almost immediately.

  • I've had my little guy in the k'tan around the house a few times. He cries when I'm putting him in, but he'll settle down and sleep eventually. It isn't comfortable for me yet, though. I feel like my boobs take up all the space in it, my baby still manages to slip down and over to one side, and I can't get it fit comfortably on my shoulders so that I can actually use my arms.

We also have the Ergo (performance? sport? something like that) with the infant insert, and I'm hoping he'll get big enough to use that soon. He's still under 7 lbs.

  • I had dd in the k'tan tonight for awhile. I felt like she still slid down. There is a baby wearing group meeting this weekend that I'm tempted to go to but she is only 3 weeks old and I'm worried about bringing her around so many people.

My fear of the local babywearing group isn't necessarily the number of people but the fact that I know a lot of them don't vaccinate...
I hadn't considered that... now I really don't want to take her. I would love having someone help me use this thing though. I also want to check out the lending library. Oh well.

  • Yeah there is a local meeting in my area as well.

But DD isn't even 2 weeks yet, and I don't know these folks from a can of paint...

But @Di_126‌ that helped a lot!! Thank you.
  • 1. I wore DS1 in the ktan a lot as a newborn and small infant. I stopped wearing him when he got heavier.

    2. My friend lent me an ergo and a boba wrap. I've been practicing the boba wrap and like it a lot so far. It feels similar to the ktan to me, but is harder to tie off. However, I like that I can just leave it on almost like a shirt, and it doesn't stretch out as easily. I will probably wait to try the ergo when he's bigger.

    3. The only other kind I've tried is the baby bjorn. It was a gift for DS1 and we both hated it. I actually returned it to BRU recently and got $150 in store credit for it.

    4. I love having full use of my arms and knowing I can get him to snuggle up and sleep in the wraps.

    This is my first carrier.

    4.  What do you like best about baby wearing?

Baby doesn't fuss when being worn.
