On October 14th I had my 40 week appointment with a Doctor that I had never met before. I had been seen by a Midwife, but she was on vacation. The Dr. checked me said I was 2-3 cm, 70% effaced, and my cervix was VERY soft. She suggested an ultrasound as I had Gestational diabetes and I hadn't had an ultra sound for about 4 weeks. They took measurements, guesstimated baby was 8 pounds 8 ounces, and baby was "sunny side up".
Upon returning to work I started to have contractions. I wasn't sure if this was just due to being checked. Went to the bathroom and there was little show, but nothing alarming, considering I had just been checked. The day continued on and I started to feel worse and worse. I told my boss that I was going to go home at half a day, and that I would work 1/2 days until baby came, although I wasn't sure that I would be back tomorrow.
I tied up all my loose ends, and left work at 1:00. Texted DH to let him know I wasn't feeling well and I was going home early. DH showed up at home about 3:00. I got out of the bath and we laid in bed for a little bit, I bounced on the ball, then we went for a walk. At about 5:00 I decided it was time to call the Dr.'s office, since it was after hours now, I knew it would be a bit before anyone called back. Contractions were now 2-3 minutes apart and about 45 seconds.
The Dr. called back and said to go to the hospital if they were still 2-3 minutes apart in an hour. They were, so off we went! The nurse hooked me up to the monitor and said she would be back in a bit after monitoring me. An hour later she came back in and checked me. I was 5cm, I wasn't going home! I asked her if I could get up and walk, she said she had to talk to the Dr. first, so I settled and labored on my hands and knees. An hour later she came back again. I told her I wanted some Stadol she said she had to check me first, and then I could get up and walk. She checked me, and I was 8cm. She said, I need to call the Dr. right now, and there's no time for any drugs or walking. She said, you are doing this all natural. So after a minor freak out I got re-focused - natural was always what I was planning on, but I just started to freak out (fear of the unknown).
The Dr. was there in no time, they were rolling in tables, IV's were going in, paperwork being signed, and before I knew it I was pushing! Audrey Elaine was born at 9:38pm after 6 sets of pushing. She was 6 pounds 7oz of perfect baby! She's such a good girl and I couldn't be more proud to be her Mommy. The Dr's and nurses awarded me the "Amish Award" for being so quite, strong and calm. It was such an amazing and surreal experience.
