I really want to get 3d sonos done but I was told by one place they don't do them past 32 weeks and a few other places said they would do them but they may not be worth it since they are so crammed in there .
Has anyone had them done after 32 weeks? Is it worth it ? Please help!!

  • Didn't like the responses on 3rd tri? If the sonos places are turning away paying customers, it's probably not a good idea if you are looking for nice pics.

Most of the places around where I live prefer to do them prior to 34 weeks. They say between 30-33 weeks for the best shots, where baby is filled out and not too cramped.

This time I had it done at almost 31 weeks, and I was 33w4d when I had my last 3D u/s with my youngest. They turned out great.

Nice try. It's called going back and finding your thread to read the responses.

    No! Don't encourage her!
One place won't do them at 32 weeks, and the others say it's up to her, but she may not get great pictures (and that may be the skill of the tech). As many often suggest, the OP can look up, via google, 3D u/s pictures at 32 weeks and determine if it's worth it. I've never heard of a place with a 32 week cut off. The three I've been to this time do them up to 36 weeks, and I was willing to try up to 34 had we not gotten decent shots last time.

It clearly varies based on the business, so there is no right or wrong here. If she wants to chance it, go for it. I don't think it's that big of a deal.

  • I just had a 4d at my last doc appt. baby is a smushed and the won't be pictures I hang on the wall! I wouldn't have had it done if my doctor hadn't told me to and my insurance paid for it! Save ur money for great newborn pics!
  • OP, to avoid wasting money, ask what their policy is on getting clear shots and what/if you pay. At two of the places I've gone to this time, if baby is in a weird position where they can't get clear shots of the face, you don't pay. My little one was breech the other times I went, and her face was right up against the placenta.

I went at 28.5 weeks and the tech couldn't get a clear shot of her face, so I was given the option to try again later, after she turned. She said they can do them at 34 weeks, but it can be a hit or miss depending on the space and baby's size. If baby is bigger then there's obviously less room, and they're more cramped.

I scheduled an appt for three days after my 30 week visit, where she was LOA. Yay! Well, she was back to breech when I went for the u/s. Somehow, this sonographer worked her magic and was able to get some decent shots of her face (she's an instructor at a sonography school). The other techs wouldn't have even attempted to get pictures. She was estimated to weigh 4 lbs at that point. There was still room for face shots, but my placenta placement made it more of a challenge.

  • The place that told me they don't do it is called a miracle to behold , I've seen quite a bit of pictures of people who have gotten them done at 33 -34 weeks and they look great ! But I've also seen some bad ones.
I think I will just wait, I have regular sonograms that look great,
I'll just make sure next time I get them done a little sooner. Thank yall:)
  • I'm getting one done at 32 weeks simply because during my a/s at 22 weeks they found fluid in her kidney which was a concern but they want to check to make sure it's gone by now. The office just so happens to have up to date top of the line equipment because they are fetal care specialists otherwise I would not pay out of pocket esp. If they are turning you down. It's best to wait. Your baby will be born soon. Save your money for things you need before baby arrives.

@CarenHope5583 The reason they're turning you down is because the baby is now pretty much out of room to move around. Since it is so cramped in there, the likelihood of you getting a bunch of good pictures is slim to none. It is a waste of time for both parties.

  • My place does it after 32 weeks. They just say you're only going to get the face but that's all I want to see in a 3d anyway. The place I go is called 4d picture perfect and they have franchise partners. I just had mine done at 29 weeks and they gave me a discount to come back for $39 and said people usually do it at around 34-36 weeks again. But I feel bad doing it again bc I have read mixed reviews on 3d ultrasounds, bc the techs aren't certified techs.
  • I say do it, it's a pretty amazing experience. Place near by me says its usually done between 24-34 weeks. See if they have a refund policy first.

This picture was taken at 31 weeks, 3 days, so they still can get good ones later in the pregnancy. However, I will say, mine was taken for medical reasons and covered by insurance, so I don't know if I would have paid to have it taken.
  • @Kshaykin, cute picture!

@CarenHope5583‌ Your baby, your choice. I would wait for baby to get here, if I were you. I booked the newborn pics and they are not cheap. I say spend money on that instead. But if you have the funds to do both, then go ahead. Just make sure you're not obligated to buy them if they turn out weird and smushed looking.
  • My husband REALLY wants to see him again. I don't like the idea of going for a non-medical reason, even though my doc said she had patients go to the place all the time and has no problems with it. I scheduled one for 32 weeks 6 days, but I didn't realize we may not actually see much. I think I'll try to convince him to save that $80! It's so sweet that he wants to see him, but if he won't even really see him...

This makes me reeeeeally want to get the 3d/4d so badly. But its like $80 at the only place near by…so I may not bother. But that is an awesome shot!

  • We got some beautiful pictures today at 31+6, baby is measuring big at 32+5. My ultrasound was necessary to check my placenta placement and cervical stitch, so it was a lovely surprise. I guess you've just got to weigh up the costs knowing you might be disappointed. xx
