STFU about baby's size

People all have something to say. Lately I'm getting tons of comments about " how big" my DS would have been had we gone full term. He was three weeks early and weighed 6#9oz. Today at one month he was 7#14 and they said 4th percentile. He 's tiny! What's with the size distortion?

Anyone else got a 1 monther under 8 #? 4% seems low for 7-14, what weight/% was your little one?

We are 1 month tomorrow and probably right above the 8lb mark. He was 7lb 7 oz on the 8th.

My youngest daughter was also tiny. I actually had a lady at a restaurant come into the restroom while I was changing her and stop, do a double take and then say, "Oh, it is a real baby!! I thought you were walking through with a doll, she's so tiny!!" Yeah, lady, I carry around life like dolls. She was 3+ months at that time and only about 10 or so pounds. She doubled birth weight at around 8-9 months (14lbs).

  • Me! My guy is tiny. At 2 weeks my LO only weighed 5lbs 12oz. He was in the "less than 2" percentile. I guess my doctor doesn't do 1 month appointments so that's the last time he was weighed. He's 2 months now and his appointment is Thursday. I don't think he's even 9lbs yet based on the way he looks and feels. He's still wearing newborn clothes and diapers. You'll laugh but my dog is 8lbs and he doesn't feel like he weighs much more. I keep comparing!

As long as your baby stays on their growth chart that's all that matters. My older son is always around 15-20 percentile and while that's smaller than most kids his age it's ok because he is still growing. It's only a concern if they suddenly start to decline in their percentile number (or I suppose dramatically increase) because it would show a problem in their growth. At least that's how it was explained to me.

So anyway, don't worry about her unless a doctor tells you to. She might just be smaller. I keep telling myself that but I'll be interested to know what I hear about my little guy on Thursday.

  • I have a 6.5 weeker who is somewhere between 7.5 and 8lbs unless he gained a whole lot of weight since last Thursday. Gives me a ton of anxiety, but he has plenty of wet and dirty diapers, is hitting the few milestones we've come across, seems satisfied after eating, and is gaining albeit veryyyyy slowly. He's grown two inches and 2.5 inches in head circumference. My LC isn't worried. We will see what his ped says at his 2 month in a couple weeks.

  • Dd was in the 10% until 6 months. She never started gaining weight until about three months. She was 7 lbs at birth at her one month she had only gained two ounces.

DS was 8.3 at birth and 10.4 and 1 month. I think it was the 50% for him.
  • I totally understand your concern. DS1 was born at 7# 14 oz but lost a pound before started gaining and we had to do a lot of weight checks with the pediatrician which was super stressful as a FTM. I don't remember how much he weighed at one month but I think he was barely above birth weight. Try not to stress about it too much since like PPs said as long as he stays on the same growth curve there shouldn't be any problem. My guy has always been in the 10-15% even now as a happy and healthy 2 year old.

  • DS is 5.5 weeks old and weighs just over 8lbs. He is in the 90th percentile for height, but 5th percentile for weight. His pedi isn't concerned because he's up 2lbs from birth, and is gaining well. Also, DH and myself were never really big babies. It does irk me when people comment on how "tiny" he is, though. They always ask if he was premature. Um, no, he came one day before he was due, and he is just fine. I was only about 7lbs at birth and DH was around 5 (he WAS early), and we just weren't destined to make big babies. Also, my lil guy had chubby cheeks, he is just so long that it's hard to tell he has body fat :P
  • I'm not stressing so much as irritated by the comments/ perplexed as to how anyone could think he's a chunk and still be in 4% ht and wt.

  • Like @JustCricket said my pedi only cares about DD1s growth curve and that it's trending properly.
I seriously hate hate hate that people are always bringing this up about our LOs. This is so psycho crazy!!
  • LO came on her due date and was 6.10.... Was 6 even when she left the hospital. At her 3 week appt last week she was 6.14 (7th percentile). Yes, she's tiny but like others have mentioned, our pedi only cares about her growth curve as opposed to her percentile. I wouldn't worry. People are always going to have something to say.
  • DS was born 7 lb 9 oz, left the hospital at 7 lb 1 oz and was 7 lb 14 oz at his 8 day appointment. He is a chunkster.
  • I get the comments too, everyone loves to comment on baby size. DS was 6 weeks yesterday, he was at the ped on Thursday and weighed in at 11 lbs 4 oz.
