Colic setting in?

LO will be 6 weeks on Saturday and the last few days he has been like a whole different baby. He used to just cry when he was hungry and usually fell asleep while nursing and had a pretty good daytime sleep routine.

Yesterday and today, he has been screaming after he eats and I can feel his little tummy is bloated with gas. We give him the bio Gaia probiotic drops in a night time bottle (he is EBF) and gripe water, but he still screams for hours and fights sleep. He has been really clingy as well, and been drooling a little and sucking on his hands a lot. He used to sleep for 2-3 hours for a daytime nap and now it's 20 minutes if were lucky.

Do you think this colic setting in or a growth spurt? He doesn't have a fever or seem sick, but should I contact my doctor, is there anything they can do?

  • @Daisy1232 I just responded in this thread (https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12466698/increased-fussiness-at-6-weeks#latest) about a similar situation.  Here's a copy and paste of what I said, because it sounds almost the exact same as what you are going through.

We hit this a couple of days ago right at 6 weeks.  It was like our really great baby all of the sudden couldn't be put down and needed to eat 24/7.  It was like every cue from him was hunger, but he wouldn't always want to eat, if that makes sense.  From the info we gathered online, we just held him a lot more, fed him whenever he wanted and just sort of dealt with it.  Not a lot worked except warms baths that sort of vegged him out a little.  He was also awake a LOT during the past few days...awake way more than normal...even long nursing sessions didn't knock him out like normal.

Then, this morning, he woke up for his 3am feed and was a different child.  He has been socially smiling for a week or so, but this morning he was really smiling and really interacting.  I thought it was maybe a fluke, and then he woke up at 7:30 and was the same way...super easy going and smiley.  So, hopefully we are out of it and it was just the 6 week growth spurt...hoping that's all it is for you too!  Good luck!

  • I think you've hit the 6 week growth/change mark. Because colicky babies start off right at birth or the first week. My LO is the exact way. I also posted on that thread about the huge change at 6 weeks for my DS.
  • Sounds more like a growth spurt. Hopefully it changes in a day or two.
  • I am going through the same symptoms, however my little guy started at about 2 weeks and we are at 3 wks 2 days now. The doctor mentioned possible reflux but said odds are he is just a fussy or colicky baby. He suggested 1/4 tsp of mylanta after feedings but that odds are just soothing him when possible is my main option. Hope it gets easier for you soon!
  • I'm glad you posted this. My LO is also 6 weeks and she is doing the same thing. Today was very different though. Still not sleeping a lot but very happy and socially smiling! Love it.

  • I could have written this post. It's been two weeks for us, but I'm still hopeful that she'll grow out of it.
  • Update: the next day he was much less fussy and slept more. And yesterday he was a doll and slept and are a ton! Thanks for your replies :)

  • Mine has been colicky since birth. This week I invested in some mommys bliss gripe water and what a difference it's made. He fusses less during the day and has been getting to sleep 2hrs earlier( 1 not 3am) with no fits before just peaceful awakened state. We give it to him 30 minutes before bottles.

  • It took some consistent use for 2-3 days to really work though. Kind of a key point.
