Dress for pumping at black tie event

So I am attending a black tie event in a few weeks - I basically need to wear a gown. Baby is still nursing every 2.5 hrs at this point so I'm assuming I'll need to pump and dump more than once. Anyone have experience with this? Not sure what type of dress would be easiest to pump in. I will probably rent from Rent the Runway. Also would you lug an electric pump or use a hand pump (don't have much experience with the hand pump yet) - man why did I agree to go to this thing when I was pregnant??

Re: Dress for pumping at black tie event

  • i think that strapless would be easiest- then you can just fold down the top to attach the pump. i'd bring a towel to tuck in the gown under your breasts to catch any drips.

i would bring the double electric- it's so much faster and more efficient than a hand pump. you could bring an ice pack if you want to save the milk.

  • It might not be QUITE black tie enough (but I think a black one, with fancy accessories, could probably pass?), but I have a floor-length version of one of these: https://www.shopbutterbynadia.com/
And it worked pretty well - it's really stretchy, but I just untied the top, and re-tied it when I was done, and since it's jersey, it doesn't wrinkle.
I actually bought it while pregnant, and it has been a go-to for me since then, since it fits no matter what my body is doing at any given time ;-)

PS - hope this link is OK? I have no relation to the seller.

  • If you're using RTR... The one I wore to a blacktie last year would be easy to move aside due to the deep V. Check out David Meister black seductive sequin gown. I want to rent it again I liked it so much :)

  • I just wore a regular dress and used a handicapped bathroom to pump. Is it at a hotel? They might have a private bathroom you can use and not worry about the dress.

  • Thanks everyone - it's at an art museum. I just figured since id be drinking id have to dump the milk? Also since it's valet parking only I'll have nowhere to put it or the pump other than stashing it under a chair or something lol
  • took the words right out of my mouth, @casey78 :)
  • What if I have more than a couple drinks? Lol i am not planning on it but...I don't have much tolerance anymore. Good idea about the coat check - I don't think there will be any type of desk open but there has to be a coat check!
