Low Amniotic Fluid, 30 weeks

Hi,

I am interested in hearing people's stories of low amniotic fluid.  At my 29 week ultrasound my fluid measured at 6.89, which is considered "borderline" low…meaning it is lower than normal but not low enough to do anything about at this point.  They have just told me to drink a ton of water and I'll be having weekly biophysical profiles beginning at 32 weeks.

Has anyone had low fluid?  How low?  What were you advised to do about it?  How did it end up (when did you deliver, did your fluid ever go back up, etc)?

  • Mine was kinda low last time I went at 8.8. They told me to drink a bunch of water and I did so now it's a little over 9. I'm just going to keep drinking. I have a large cup (28oz) and my goal is to drink 3 a day.

  • I had low fluid, it went down to a 2 starting at my 20 week scan. I was told there was nothing that I could do, but the more important thing was to figure out why it was low. I had an amnio to check for chromosomal abnormalities, and then I put myself on bed rest for about 2 weeks. I went in weekly to monitor the baby's growth and fluid level and after 3 weeks it was a 9.57 and after that it slowly rose to a 14 by week 28. My baby had IUGR, but we still do not know what caused the major drop in fluid.

  • At 29 weeks, my fluid level was a 5.  I was admitted to L&D and given IV fluids for 24 hours.  After that, it went up to an 8 for several weeks and then up to a high of 13 the last it was checked before I delivered.  I drank a ton of water after the 5, and I guess it worked.  I also drank a lot of coconut water because I heard it was good for low fluid levels.  Not sure how valid that was, but I liked it, so why not?
  • DD had IUGR then at a growth ultrasound they saw the fluid dropped to a 3 and I was hospitalized (at 32 weeks). I had IV fluids, but it never rose above a 7. DD was delivered at 36 weeks due to some signs of distress.
They may want to have extra monitoring and/or deliver early since low AFI increases the chance of cord accidents.

  • I haven't but a friend of mine did.  She got a litre water bottle and made it her goal to drink 3-4 liters per day.  Her fluid levels were back to normal within a month.

  • I'm late to the party here, but will comment in case it could help anyone who is searching (like I was) for more experience stories.

I had low amniotic fluid at my 36 week ultrasound.  I don't know the number, but it was extremely low (2, maybe?).  My OB admitted me and induced me that day - Would not even let me go home to get my hospital bag.  I thought that was a bit extreme, but figured she knew best.  during my labor, they tested to see if I had been leaking amniotic fluid and were able to determine that was not the cause of my low amniotic fluid.  I doubt that it was caused by dehydration because water was my "pregnancy craving" and I drank a ton of it every day.  Luckily, my baby was born healthy (although he was stubborn and not ready to come out, so after being induced and laboring for a full day, only to stop progressing at 5 cm, he was taken by c-section).  Now he's a year old!

Those of you who commented that you had low amniotic fluid, how did your labors go?  I hope your babies were born healthy.  I'm curious if low-amniotic fluid is something that could happen in a subsequent pregnancy.  Anyone have any info or experiences on that topic?  My doctors didn't seem to have an answer.
