New baby insurance question

So LO will probably go on DH's insurance once he gets here (one week out from EDD, yayy!), but I have a question about how this works... when baby is born, does DH need to contact his insurance company right away to get him added to the policy? Or is this something we should already have set up and ready to go in anticipation of his arrival, whenever that may be? I'm just wondering how his coverage will work in regards to the circ procedure in the hospital and all that. TIA!

Re: New baby insurance question

  • I think most policies are different depending on the company but with ours we have to give notice to my company within 30 days of birth

  • You have 30days of coverage before you need to add LO. He/she is automatically covered for that time period. They need the social so that's why they give you 30 days

  • Have your DH contact his HR for what he needs.  We need a copy of DS3's birth certificate and his SSN before we can get him added to our insurance.  With one of our other kids, I think we just had to call.

  • Thanks for asking this question, I was wondering about this too!
  • Sounds easy enough. Thanks lady's!
  • At least in my state you won't get a copy of the official birth certificate until the baby is about 3 months old.  When you are discharged from the hospital, they should give you a hospital birth certificate which can be used as the official version until you get the one from your state's vital records office.

  • I think everyone has covered it...but I did add a notification to my calendar to remind me to do it. It has the phone number I need to call and lists all of the information I need to gather in order to add LO. just a helpful hint since I am sure mommy sleep deprivation brain will not remember it all when the time comes!

This is how ours work. I needed to send the copy of the birth certificate I got in the hospital to my HR to add LO to the insurance

Ok, and the insurance company just back-covers what treatments/procedures the baby received while in the hospital?

    Yep, exactly.

  • The requirements vary by company and even policy. Not all require ssn or birth certificate. Have your DH talk to HR now so you know what the requirements are.

  • Double check with HR and the insurance company. If DH has an individual plan and needs to switch to a family plan there may be something he needs to do through his employer. I called my insurance company and added my daughter the day after she was born. I just gave her name and DOB and she was added within 24 hours of me calling. The same was true with my older daughter.

Last time we had an issue filling a prescription for my older daughter because she was not showing up under the policy but we never had any issues with doctors visits. I could definitely be wrong regarding this, but last time I thought my maternity coverage covered her care in the hospital before we were discharged.

  • My husband got a new job and his last day at the old job is before 30 days is up. Does anyone know if it's necessary to add baby? He let his hr know to add him but I'm not sure if they did or will for that reason. They haven't asked us for anything.

  • Add the baby @griffers‌ The current company can't refuse to add the baby and you need coverage from birth so add the baby.

  • I don't think those first 30 days are automatically covered like someone above insinuated. What I see happens is that they add a shell of a person to insurance ("baby") right after birth and may start to hold claims under that name for 30 days and then when you add the child officially through your employer, they back date the coverage to birthdate and rerun the claims. If you don't add baby to insurance, you don't get 30 days of free coverage.

Talk to your hubby's HR dept or manager asap.
  • Ok this is what I was thinking, that they needed the baby on there to back cover the 30 days. I don't think we get the birth certificate for a while, but not sure if that's why they haven't asked for anything? Luckily his new job's insurance starts right away so we won't go without for any period of time. I hear cobra is super expensive!

  • I need a SSN to add her to mine. I'm just hoping I get it in time...
