I need help!

I do not know if I should breastfeed or if I shouldn't! I know there is a lot of positives with breastfeeding, but I cannot afford a breast pump! Does anyone know where to find good cheap ones, or just give me opinions! Are you breastfeeding, have you breastfed, etc! Thank you!!

Re: I need help!

  • Did you check with your insurance company to see if they covered a breast pump?

  • Do you have insurance?  If so the breast pumps are free.  You just give your insurance company a call.  I hope this helps!

  • On Facebook they have a lot of these trading websites and I have seen some for 85$! But I never know if they work, even though they say they do! So a used one is fine, as long as I replace the tubes, correct?
  • Any specific brand that people use? Or suggest?
  • My insurance covered the Medela double electric I just picked up.
  • No.  I wouldn't trust a used one ...the only used ones that would be ok are deemed CLOSED system, and those are much less prevalent and usually hospital grade and most likely aren't the ones you're coming across.

Check with your insurance if you have it...many of them cover a free breastpump, especially if its not a grandfathered plan and it follows the ACA law.

A popular choice is the Medela brand Pump-in-Style advance.

  • Thank you! I'll definitely call my insurance company and see what they can do for me.
  • Another brand that might be covered is the Hygeia .... this is the one I'm trying this time

  • If you can't afford a breastpump, you're gonna be hard pressed to afford formula for an entire year.

Manual breastpump are cheap. I'm not sure if you're on any sort of assistance, but I believe WIC may cover those cost? Don't quote me on that. Also, check with your insurance company.

  • Unless you plan to work after the baby comes, you don't necessarily need a breast pump. Go for it! :)
  • If insurance can't help I know our local pharmacy has a rental program on hospital grade closed system breast pumps. It might just be a Canadian thing though because I believe the cost is subsidized by our provincial healthcare

  • I breastfed my DD until she was 21 months. I'm a SAHM and was able to get by with a single manual hand pump from Avent. It was maybe $30. Best of luck with whatever you do.

  • Are you going to SAH or are you going to work?

  • If you have a goodwill near you check them out. Our Goodwills get Target's discontinued merchandise. We found an Ameda Purely Yours Ultra sealed, in the box for $35. (Like many previous posters said your insurance, if you are in the US, is likely to cover it, however some like mine do not.)

  • Layaway is also a great option cause you could just go paying it off! I always encourage breastfeeding but if you choose to formula feed that's totally okay too! Like PP said check insurance and WIC and check out LA Leche League if you have one near you, they help out a lot! Also I've heard you can even rent them for whatever amount of time you plan to breastfeed! Hope this helped!
  • I got through breastfeeding two children with a $20 First Years manual pump. And yes, I did return to work and pumped for them. I'm gonna have to check what shape it's in, and I may have to replace it with a new one. I love it.
