STM Pain Management Options

Good morning! I am a STM who had an epidural the first time around and it did not give me any relief. I am not 100% I want to do that again considering the outcome last time. Has anyone else had experience with other pain management options that worked for you? Not to mention getting an epidural may have been one of the scariest moments of my life! I am a big baby and I realize that but I just do not want to go through such terror again to get the same outcome. What are your thoughts? Outcomes?

Re: STM Pain Management Options

  • I had a successful epidural the first time around, but spent awhile in the jacuzzi tub at the hospital during my second labor.  It helped me relax so much that I went from 6 cm before getting in straight to 10 by the time I walked back to my room. (that's why I had no epidural, no time for it!)  I could feel the tingling of the feeling coming back slowly as I walked back to my room, had my husband rub my back for a little bit, and boom, it was showtime!  My water broke and baby was coming on his own without me even pushing.  The pain that I did have was very very short lived.

  • I have never done anything for pain, not even gas. I always just told myself the pain would end eventually ;)
  • I had demerol with my first. I found it made me groggy(i passed out for a few hours) i did not like how it made me feel really drug and I heard my words slurring. That's the only other "relief" i have any experience with aside from the epidural. My sister used laughing gas :)

Still immune to tickers. Polite Canadian 99% of the time. SAHM of 7 soon to be 8. I read more than I post.

  • I had an epidural but it was successful and totally eased the pain.  Prior to that, I had some inter-venous pain meds (Demerol?) which also worked but it made me feel groggy and out of it.  I would like to avoid that this time and just stick to the epidural.
  • I am planning to labor and possibly give birth in the tub. FTM, so this will be a first for me. But all the research I've done indicates the hot/warm water really helps with the pain.
  • FTM, but I read "The Yoga Birth Method" after going to a bunch of prenatal classes. I like the perspective that it puts on the pain and labor. This is what I plan on using. Not sure if any STM's here have used it.
