tailbone pain!!

Hey ladies, not sure if anyone else is suffering from this, but I am having tailbone pain. It feels like I bruised my tailbone. I googled it and apparently this is a common thing in pregnancy due to that lovely relaxin. The pain is definitely tolerable, it just sucks. Any tips/advice from those who have had it or have it?

Trying to nip it in the bud before it gets worse.

Re: tailbone pain!!

  • I had it early on. It was painful to stand up if I'd been sitting too long. The only things I really found to help were getting up more frequently (not sitting as long) and not sitting on firm surfaces.

It would be really painful for a few days and then gone the next. Very sporadic. Hope you get some relief!

You described it perfectly. Thanks for the tip! I will try to get up more.

  • Mine truly is excruciating at times. Sitting or standing. I'm wondering if a massage will help? Following this thread for more advice :)

  • I get it too and I don't remember having it with my last pregnancy. It gets to the point where it hurts to walk. I try to just lay down.
  • Ballet/yoga stretches!!!! Bending over as far as you can (as if you're trying to touch your toes). Also the butterfly stretch works wonders for my pain. Also a heating pad on a medium/low setting! Also try & get your SO to give you a massage (circular motion works best for me).
  • Mine has been terrible the last week. I never had anything like this with my first.
It is worst when I am sitting on a hard surface or lying on the floor, which I used to do a lot with DD, but no longer!
Thanks @foxslaw I will definitely try the stretches!

  • Moving should help also warm soak in the tub. If you start to feel a lot if pressure and extreme pain you could be developing a pilonidal cyst which is not fun at all. But you will know due to pain level and a bump on your tailbone that looks bruised. If you get that make sure you go to the dr. Best of luck! Hope it gets better soon!!!!
  • thanks for all of the advice and tips ladies! The pain has probably doubled this week. Plan on asking my doc about it on Monday at my next appt.

  • I've had it on and off this pregnancy (not at all with my first one!) for months. It's so achy and stiff!! My doctor advised me to sit on a pillow at work, but otherwise says it's just normal and unavoidable.

I do the double pigeon on the advice of the prenatal yoga class teacher -- if you can do that, it's really helpful for me, especially when it's just on one side of the tailbone!

Also, I'm not adverse to taking painkillers when it's terrible and that helps a bit. And finally, mini-massages for sure -- I make a pillow nest on the bed so I can lay on my stomach and then have my husband massage it. Feels awkward at first but it really does help!

Nothing I've done makes it not show up again the next day though. :(

  • Oh and, if you're googling a lot, the term I found that seems to best describe it is: posterior pelvic pain. And most references to it say it happens to pregnant women and can't be "cured" in those cases. X(

  • The tailbone pain is called sacrum pain. With my first pregnancy I had it so bad I couldn't move at times. I found going to a chiropractor every week that specialized in pregnancy helped some, but I basically had to suck it up. And yes, it was like the worst thing ever. I know your pain girl! Hang in there.
  • Ouch ladies! Sorry for everyone.y sister warned me about this too...
Totally in another direction, but had anyone tried an Physical Therapist who specializes in the pelvic floor? If anyone's near AR, my sister is one ;) basically she works with pregnant women and lots postpartum. Some women were in pain for two years and the exercises and manipulation she does freed them from that. I hope you guys can find someone or these other exercises work. And hope insurance would cover a few visits. Good luck!
  • I have no help other than was PP have said. I just try not to sit on a firm seat, but yes, it does hurt.
