Outings with LO

Wondering how long others are keeping LO out of public reach? The ped at the hospital said a month for closed in places with lots of people. Nab check up today they said same thing. So...does that mean everything....grocery store, restaurants, etc. what are you all doing?

Re: Outings with LO

  • DS will be three weeks old on Sunday and we've gone to Target three times, the grocery store once, out to eat once, and my work once. I've also walked with him around the park a few times. No one has approached us or tried to touch the baby.

  • I've been to target and babies r us with him in his carrier or wearing him. No one has tried to touch him. My husband took him to visit FIL at work but no one was allowed to touch him except FIL unless they washed their hands which apparently no one wanted to do that much work :/ fine by me!

  • I'm wondering the same thing...LO was born on October 7th and friends (with babies who are 4 months to 2 years old) are having a Halloween party on November 1.  Do you guys think it'd be okay to bring LO to the party?  I imagine since many of the parents have babies who are not old enough for flu shot that all the adults would have been responsible and gotten flu shots already.

Though I have my family with me, I am getting a little lonely just staying at home and not going places with LO.  My family is pretty strict about not letting me (or LO) go places or run errands right now.  My mom doesn't even want me to take LO to the public park for a stroll, but we did go against that after our 1 week doctor appointment since we had to be out anyways and mom wouldn't know.  (P.S. I am 28, not a kid, but my mom is just very cautious.)
  • We've gone on walks with her. That's it. We heard one month from our pediatrician, too. If I go out before then I'll just wear her and not let people touch her. We got through nine months of pregnancy. We can get through flu season.

  • @shannonshare I would go to the party. You need to get out or you will go crazy. Do you have a carrier like a bjorn, ergo, or moby? Those are perfect for keeping the baby close, but leaving your hands free. People can't get too close, and I think there isn't much risk of getting germs if you are wearing the baby.

  • I still have an inside baby, but she'll be going places shortly after birth :) Oldest has to get to and from school, if we have to go in any place, I plan to wear her. We're having a birthday party for my middle dude and niece on November 8th and I plan to wear her, definitely NOT playing pass the baby.
  • I still have an inside baby, but I don't plan to stop going places when LO arrives.

With DS 1, we went to Target on the way home from the hospital, and to babies r us and the mall 2 days after that.

We will continue our normal routine and just not let people too close.

  • I think I would die if I couldn't go anywhere for a month! With both my lo's I left the hospital and went to a store before going home. I keep my kids in their car seat and don't let anyone touch them. I'm kind of weird about people touching my kids ever, no matter how old they are.
  • We've been out most days since he was born . The pedi probably had the high risk of exposing him to something anyways.

  • I haven't gone anywhere since Mason was born. Partly I think that's because I've been terrified to strap him into his car seat for fear it will rub on his cord and cause another bleed. I imagine I'll stay home until that no longer scares me.
  • DS had an infection at one week and ended up in the hospital overnight because they wanted to treat it aggressively. Illnesses are no joke the first month so we are not taking him anywhere except the park/playground until he is one month. It's a huge inconvenience but totally worth it.

If we do end up going, which we may (it'll just be a few days before her one month birthday), I definitely will bring her in her Baby K'Tan.  Since most everyone there will have small babies too, I think they may be more understanding, hopefully.
  • We are three weeks old and have been too many places to count. Getting out of the house is really important for my sanity after being home all day with a two year old and newborn. I'm a working mom so this whole stay at home thing is new to me. I'm still trying to get the hang if it. We are always out doing something, just not the homebody type of people I guess. We just keep the car seat cover over him and make sure we wash our hands or use sanitizer before touching him. Nobody has ever bothered us.

  • We took our 6 day old to Walmart bc we moved into our house that day and needed more stuff... never have I ever noticed how disgusting and dirty that store could be until we did that. So stick to nicer stores and keep the cover on the car seat ;)
  • I was wondering the same thing. I still have onside baby til Wednesday. I was planning on using carrier covers when out & about. I was hoping that would be safe.

My MIL (who i adore) is a retired nurse and all of a sudden she seems to be a major germaphobe when it comes to this baby, she's not normally. She was telling me DH and I shoul d take turns going to store etc for 1st month. She didn't even want me going to my 5 year old neice's birthday party last weekend. I guess there something to it lol
Me: 33 - PCOS & Hypothyroidism DH: 35 - SA is good Married since 2010 (together since 2006) TTC since June 2009 (we knew we would have issues and wanted family right away after we got married). No pregnancies yet. May 2013 - started first round of Chlomid & ovidrel cycle.
  • We've been out quite a bit. I have to walk my son to school every morning and we've also been to the grocery store, Walmart, and to family events for Canadian Thanksgiving.

  • This is somewhat related...are any of you asking visitors to get the flu vaccine?  Or if friends don't get the flu vaccine, are you allowing them to visit baby?  If yes, are you putting any restrictions (e.g. cannot hold the baby, baby in baby carrier, etc.)?

Thanks!  I know I am being a super nervous mom, but I know that if babies get the flu, it can be pretty serious.
  • The hospital pediatrician seriously told us not to take the baby shopping etc for two months. I almost laughed at him. I know it would be ideal but it is just not feasible at all!

We have only taken DD to church Sunday. DH or I were the only ones to hold her.

I asked anyone who will have regular contact with LO to get the flu shot (grandparents really). I am not requiring other friends who stop by to make sure they have received the shot, though. I know not everyone is considerate, but I would never visit a young baby if I even had a mild head cold. To combat dormant symptoms, we do have strategically placed hand sanitizer around our house and will have no issue asking guests to please wash their hands before we allow them to hold our LO. We also will only allow a few visitors at a time so we can keep an eye on everyone more easily.
