Waiting til 6 months? (another food discussion)

So all this talk about introducing solids...anyone out there waiting until 6 months? I had originally planned on introducing at 5 months but now that it's here and gone I'm thinking more along the 6 month guideline. Am I ruining my baby? Pedi said "betweent 4-6 months" but didn't seem too concerned where on the spectrum we felll. Arguments for? Against?

  • 6 months was our plan but DS showed an interest in food around 4 months. He would grab our pizza off our plates and try to put it in his mouth. But he does that with everything. We waited until 5 months and now he loves food. Initially around 4.5 months, he tried a few things every couple days and hated them all. I guess he wasn't ready until now.

    Double post. Sorry
  • We are waiting. DD had a few random hives so Dr felt more comfortable waiting. She said we could start oatmeal early if she was still waking up hungry. We've had a couple good weeks of sleep fortunately so we are still waiting.
  • The AAP recommendation is 6 months so you're definitely not ruining your baby. Their digestive systems are more mature and you reduce the risk of potential reactions. Nothing wrong with starting now if you want, but you are certainly not going to cause any harm by waiting!

This. We're waiting until at least six months. I'm in no rush for the nasty poop.

  • Not to start an argument but why does it matter if he's BF or FF? He's FF, does that mean that he should start solids earlier than 6 months?
  • We are most likely waiting until 6 months. Mostly because I'm too lazy to be trying things sooner. I'm really interested in BLW. Our ped said we might want to start some cereal before 6 months because of baby's depleting iron stores but I think we'll wait until 6 months.

  • Like a few PPs, I've been lazy and only just started reading the BLW book to decide how we want to feed her. She'll likely be very close to 6 months when we move forward with food.
  • Started rice cereal at 4 months at doctor recommendation. Baby girl was almost 10 pounds at birth. Shows interest in food. Can sit assisted in her seat. Makes faces but seems to like it. Give her cereal at 5pm. 1 tablespoon with 4 tbsp of formula. Then her final 6oz bottle is at 6. In bed 6:30pm and sleeps 12-14 hours each night!! Gets about 36 oz formula each day.
  • This has been helpful. So what I'm gathering is maybe I should stop being lazy and start introducing. Got it :)
  • My pedi said anywhere from 4-6 months is fine. It's up to us. She has 3 kids and said with the 1st 2, she started at 4 months and with her last, she started at 6 and there's no difference with them with allergies, food issues, etc. DS is 5 months and we haven't started yet, mainly because we're lazy and don't have a high chair yet.

  • Pedi had me start rice cereal at months to start things off. He said we'll discuss puree at DS 6 month appt. I do notice that DS is very interested in the food we eat, so I may try something soon, just to see how it goes.

  • Interest in food is not an indication of readiness or digestive system maturity. Babies are simply curious by nature.

We're waiting till at least 6 months. Introducing food is a PITA, so I'm in no hurry.

  • My LO started cereal at 4mths and will be 5 mths on the 30th and just started sweet potato. My pediatrician said that it isn't as serious an issue as people make it to be. He said anytime after 4 mths is perfectly fine. He said to start with cereal then fruit or veggie whichever I prefer with a little cereal mixed in until he gets used to the thinner texture. That is just my pediatrician's view and I trust him and what he told me to do. Babies have been eating like this for years and they don't seem to have any issues. I think I started cereal sooner, in fact.

Choose what works best for you. There really isn't a wrong answer. They are still consuming the same amount of bottles/ breastmilk so they are getting all the nutrients they need if you decide to wait.
  • @comicsans at first I thought you had been banned due to your changed avatar - don't scare me like that!
  • We started at 5.5 months. DS has been sitting unassisted for 3-4 weeks and has problems with infrequent pooping, so we decided to try pear purée. It works but he doesn't want to be spoon fed so we've switched to BLW the past couple days. It's not helping him poop quite as well but he really loves feeding himself. He shakes with excitement when he sees me bringing him food. My stance on introducing solids is that within the recommendations, you are the best judge of your LO's readiness. And if you try it an decide he isn't ready, you can always try again a week later.

  • We started DD with purées this week, she will be 6 months old on Monday, so a week before I was originally planning. We did oatmeal at first but she wasn't a fan, so then we tried peas. She loves them and will eat the whole (small) jar. That's all we've done so far since we are just 5 days in.

  • I've really enjoyed reading what everyone else is doing. I still haven't made my mind up on what to do. At our last appointment she said to wait until closer to 6 months, when she can sit unassisted, and shows intrest in food. She said closer to 6 bc that's when the reflex to push food out stops. Well, we are just over 5 months and starting to poop inconsistently. I'm debating what to do so Ive enjoyed the insight ladies.
  • Our pedi felt pretty strongly about waiting til 6 months and I was more than happy to wait. She is CLEARLY interested and can sit on her own. My parents will be in town one week before 6 months so we are going to give her some sweet potatoes then :)

  • I am planning on waiting until 6 months (which is only a couple weeks away!). I ordered a BLW book so once I have a chance to look that over, I'll start on solids. The pedi asked how we felt about rice cereal at the 4 month appointment but she didn't have a strong opinion either way. Good to hear what others are doing. I am a FTM so this is all new to me. Guess I will figure it out as I go!
  • I planned on waiting until 6 months, I really want to skip cereal and go straight to purees. My pedi was fine with this and said we can talk about it more at his 6 months appointment. However, my LO is small and we have a weight gain check up at 5m10d, so we might talk more then on it.
  • We are waiting at least until 6 months...maybe longer. Our pedi said that technically no need until 1 year. Frankly, I felt like with ds1 he wasn't doing anything other than making a mess until about 8-9 months.

  • I'm assuming for 6 months but a lot of it has to do with his readiness. He's not sitting up on his own yet (unsupported) but he's starting to smack his lips when I eat.

Tbh, I've been super judgey when my SIL3 said that her 3 month old loves carrots and when a casual acquaintance suggested I feed my growing 4 month old solids to get him through the 4 month wakeful period. (Her 3 month old granddaughter was eating solids a couple of weeks before her 4 month birthday).

How much of the purees are you guys feeding your LO in one sitting?
I am feeding her one of the smaller stage 1 Earth's Best jars once per day. I noticed Beechnut's stage 1 jars are a lot bigger, so I'm not sure how much of that I will give. She will eat the whole small jar, so I might go up to one jar twice per day soon.

  • I had every intention of waiting until 6 months, per pediatrician and BLW advice. But he kept acting extra hungry for weeks on end, not like his normal growth spurt behavior. I continued breastfeeding as often as possible, but decided to give him food at 5 months old just to see how he handled it and would either stop or move forward from there. He loved it! He particularly likes broccoli and avocado. He's also a fan of applesauce inside this feeder contraption.

  • Disclaimer: I haven't read responses yet.

With first kid, we started purees at 5 months, once a day (usually dinner time).

With this LO, we have already started purees and he isn't 5 months yet. The pedi suggested it b/c he has so much formula already and he is a big boy, she said it may help keep his formula intake a little more "normal". He is just a hungry boy.

Anyway, he is eating a jar of stage 1 baby food twice a day. He eats the whole thing too.

  • I caved. We are 10 days from 6 months, and I am going out of my mind nursing all the time. Made up a 50/50 mix of avocado and BM at dinner time tonight. She ate from the spoon like a champ, but got distracted and didn't eat much after that. Will do the same for the next few days. Then maybe some banana next.

  • @kat8805‌, we did avocado first then tried banana tonight (both mashed and mixed with BM). DS liked avocado ok, but appeared to love the banana. Gonna do sweet potato next.

She's wasn't too crazy about it either, but had the motions down. But that's to be expected when she watches us eat like a hawk /:)

I'm sure banana is usually a hit, since it's a bit sweeter.

That's what I assumed too. The avocados were also only ok avocados. When we gave him the banana, he made the impatient noise he makes when I'm not getting the boob out fast enough when I stopped feeding him.
    Adorable!

Yea, I only used 1/4 of the avocado last night, and after a night I'm the fridge it had started turning. The bananas we had left were also getting a bit brown, so I prepared the rest of the avocado and both of the banana, and froze them in ice cube trays, so I can pull them out as we go.

  • Besides being on rice cereal for her spit up, we will be waiting until 6 months. We never really got cleared for solids at her 4 month check up. I think her pedi just doesn't like to start that early and she has had reflux so we wanted to wait until her stomach matured a little more. I gave her peaches once and she enjoyed it but that's about it.

FYI the one night LO actually did eat all his cereal he did not sleep any longer for his first stretch of sleep but he was easier to put down and put back down after his wake up. Not sure if related because food doesn't = more sleep for some babies.

This. And formula doesn't mean longer stretches either. I have been told left and right that formula fed babies tend to sleep longer. I was kind of looking forward to that when I switched her over. That was complete bs when it came to us!
