NBR: Insurance

Anyone have experience with Aetna insurance? DH and I are looking at adding me and eventually the baby onto his plan. I have my own insurance through Blue Shield but it looks like it may be a better option for me and the baby to be on his plan. It's always been cheaper to go with a separate plan for me but it looks like that may change with the baby. Good experience?Bad? Indifferent? DH doesn't go to the doctor much so he really hasn't used his insurance other than a routine physical and to have a mole biopsied. Thanks!

Re: NBR: Insurance

  • We checked and my primary care doctor, my OB, and hospital are all in network. He has a high deductible of $4000 for family but his plan comes with an HSA which I don't have. His company also matches .30 on the dollar.

@bwall84‌ at least its a January deductible, that will mean the rest of the year is covered for appointments and such, eh?

I will continue my insurance for me but I can't carry dependents, so babies and I are also included on hubby's Tricare.

  • We talked about just adding the baby onto DH's insurance but if his deductible will go up to $4,000 anyway we may as well add me. It will be about $300 a month for all three of us and DH only pays $30 for himself right now and if it was DH and baby it would be about $180 a month. If we add the baby onto my insurance it would be around the same cost monthly of around $300 just for me and the baby. However, after the deductible is met on DH's insurance he has an 80/20 plan where as mine is 60/40 after my $2,900 deductible.

  • Generally speaking, it is much more important to compare actual plans and not just insurance companies. Also, it is "usually" more cost effective to go with a plan through an employer, versus and individual plan you purchase yourself. It sounds to me like your husband has a company plan, and yours is an individual plan. I would compare the coverages very closely. Also, does his employer offer a better plan for a higher cost? That might be worth researching. I currently have Blue Cross, but it is through my employer. Our plan is absolutely wonderful, but I do pay for it. Plans are basically always, you get what you pay for. My husband has a Cigna plan through his work with horrible coverage and he pays almost nothing per paycheck. My plan is fabulous, but it costs a lot more.

  • Definitely compare the actual plans and see what fits better for your situation. I have Aetna now and I will say that their network of doctors is wonderful so that's a huge plus.
  • I used to have Aetna and they were great. But every plan is so different, so that could mean nothing for you. You should compare the actual plans that you are considering purchasing.

  • We have been going through the plans line by line and it looks like DH's plan will most likely win out. I just want to make sure I'm making the right choice. I even looked at some of the plans under Covered California but I really don't want to go that route. My primary care doctor doesn't accept it and neither does my OB. Hopefully I will have a full time teaching job next year where the benefits are way better.
