Baby Names

Thoughts on our pick for girl name..

Sooo if this babe turns out to be a girl we have decided on Sawyer as her first name and possibly Elizabeth for the middle name. Thoughts? Any other suggestions for a middle name...needs to be one or three syllables to sounds right with our last name. Our dd is Kinley Lyne...Kinley and Sawyer <3

I like Sawyer better than Brooklyne for what it's worth

I like different names so Sawyer on a girl doesn't bother me at all
  • The occupational names, like Sawyer (literally "one who saws timber," which should be clear from the first syllable) are IMO pedestrian on boys and unattractive on girls.  I don't care if other people name their girls Sawyer, it's not a nice name for a girl.

Are you pronouncing the second syllable of Brooklyne as LINE?  I would assume that from the spelling.  If you are pronouncing it like the borough in NYC, spell it that way.  I don't care for it but at least it sounds more feminine.

Elizabeth is lovely.  There are plenty of nickname options to personalize it and it is so much more feminine and classy than your other choices.

  • No it would be pronounced like the city but spelt with an E on the end as Kinley's, mine, my mother and my grandmother all have Lyne (pronounced Lynn) as our middle name and would like to keep the spelling that way for Brooklyne too. When I was naming Kinley I was also told it was a masculine name so I guess that is just my taste.
  • Sawyer is really, terribly awful. Yuck.

I really would love the name if the two were reversed?  Elizabeth Sawyer?

FTR, Sawyer doesn't really strike me as either masculine or feminine.  It's a surname, which always feels genderless to me.

  • It's nms, but I really don't mind Sawyer Elizabeth. Brooklynne is ok too, but I pick Sawyer over Brooklynne.

  • Another possibility...

My sister and I share a (beautiful, I think) middle name and have always loved it. It has a lot of meaning for the two of us. I love the idea of saving the "Lyne" for the middle name of both your girls.

    Kinley sounds nice with Brooke.

If you like place and occupation names, perhaps there are other choices that would be more appealing to others and a nice fit with Kinley. Perhaps Paige or Harper. Eden, Bethany, Moriah.

  • I think sawyer is great for a boy.
What about a different unisex name?
    Morgan. Taylor. Bailey. Riley. Etc.
  • I appreciate the input and will more than likely still be going with Sawyer. I think the name is very country not masculine and I think it will fit for my family. Thank you for the other suggestions the middle name will most likely be Elizabeth or Jade. While it may not be your name choice it is not very nice to call it awful.

  • I am the one of the odd ones out (and I usually am with names) but I like Sawyer. Definitely over Brooklyne especially with that spelling. It would bug me.

  • There has got to be another choice, OP. What about Brooke, with MN Lyne, like another poster suggested? Or Elizabeth Sawyer? Sawyer isn't a super attractive name to begin with, and on a girl it's cringeworthy. Yeah, other people have done it, but other people have also used monstrosities like Nevaeh and Airwrecka. I don't think you can use that as a legit reason. There are gorgeous names out there for GIRLS. Maybe these aren't your style and maybe I'm talking to a wall, but names that I think go with Kinsley:

    Marilyn
    Harper
    Elise
    Ariana
    Emma
    Paige

  • This might be going against the grain, but I don't think Sawyer Elizabeth is that bad. It's nms, but so is Brooklyne and so is Kinely, and honestly? I like Sawyer better than either of those two names.

Sawyer Jade is less pretty though, I definitely prefer Sawyer Elizabeth - it flows better.

  • I love the name. It sounds so cute.
  • I would never see Sawyer as a girl's name.  I am not a fan of Brooklyne either but at least Brooklyn sounds a bit feminine.  I don't think Kinley is masculine for what it's worth.  How about just Brooke Lynn (Lyne)?  I think that names like Piper, Harper, Sydney, Morgan, Taylor all have a similar feel to them as Kinley without being so masculine.
  • I like Sawyer Elizabeth more than Sawyer Jade, Jade seems too blunt to me. Sawyer Elizabeth flows and sounds better, but that's just my opinion. Just throwing it out there :)
  • Sawyer is definitely better than Brooklyne, I'll give you that.

  • Sawyer on a boy is awesome. On a girl it's butchery.

  • I love Elizabeth for a first name. Don't really like sawyer for a girl.
  • I love Sawyer! I have friend who has a little girl named Sawyer and she is a doll.
  • My thoughts went from 'Ugh' (Sawyer) to a literal facepalm (Brooklyne.)

Another vote for Brooke Lyne. Or something else entirely.

  • Sawyer is horrible, awful, terrible for a girl.  I don't get the appeal when there are so many girl names to choose from.

  • I have friends that named their children some awful names, in my opinion. Would I tell them that now? Nope. But you asked for thoughts, though you don't seem open to suggestions so I'm not sure why you asked to begin with.

FWIW, I don't like Sawyer on a boy or a girl. I do know a little boy named Sawyer. No girls with that name. I like the name Brooklyn, but I think it's becoming too trendy. Use Lyne as a middle name, but don't stick it on another name as it won't look or sound right.

Please use correct spelling. My name is Alycia, and while I've grown to like the spelling it was a bitch growing up. I've been called everything from Ashley to Allison. A-lish-a to al-eye-see-a. But the worst part was I could never get a pencil or little keychain with my name on it. Hmph.
  • All the Sawyers I've met are girls. I think it's cute and goes well with Kinley.
