Success after IF

IUI Success??

Visiting from the Secondary IF board :)

I am on IUI cycle #3 with gonal-f and trigger. Ovulated both previous cycles but no BFP. As I'm sure we have all felt, I go through these really positive "everything is going to be great" moments and then these terrible "Its never going to happen" moments. Of course the more it doesn't work, the more reading I do on Secondary IF and what does work. Earlier this week I read up on IUI and realized the success rate is like 20%... I found it super discouraging.

I was hoping someone has some of you may have your own IUI success stories and was hoping for some positive vibes!!

Re: IUI Success??

  • My DD is a result of IUI #3 with gonal-f. A perfectly "normal" couple only has a 20% change of getting pregnant in a given cycle so don't focus on 20% being low. GL!

  • I did two IUIs that didn't work, then did IVF, and then years later went back to IUIs and the second one worked.  So, that's one out of four.  I know it's hard, but don't get too discouraged just yet.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

Hang in there!! It's a terrible process. I did get pregnant on my first IUI with stims and trigger both times around. It was just getting to shady grove was my problem. Saw two other doctors who gave me drugs that I didn't respond to. I was always told by Shady Grove their success rates were based on having 3 IUI's to get a successful one. But my friend went through it was well and it was her 4th IUI that worked for her. So don't give up..

I also went from 17-24 days of stims so if the process is taking long..just roll with it. Some of us are slow responders.

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born.

6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

  • I didn't suffer from secondary IF and didn't use gonal-f. My IUI's were with Letrozole and Trigger. I got lucky on #3, but like you was very discouraged it wasn't going to work after having such high hopes for #1 & #2. I met people IRL that got lucky one IUI #1 and then another person who got lucky with #2. One of the ladies who got lucky with IUI #1 then went to have a second child and did 3 IUIs and ended up going on to IVF (she got lucky with IVF #1 and had twins). Good luck to you!
Me 29 DH 30 Unexplained IF TTC since wedding May 2012. IUI #1 11/5/13-BFN.  IUI #2 12/5/13-BFN. IUI #3-12/30/14. All three with Femara CD 3-7 and Ovidrel trigger. +HPT 1/13/14 First +ever!!! Beta #1 195 Beta #2 1/15-533. Ultrasound on 2/4 showed one bean. EDD 9/22/14. Team Green turned Team Blue-Baby Conner arrived on 9/19/14.

  • I has success on IUI #2 with letrozole and trigger. I totally understand when you say you feel like it'll never happen sometimes. The cycle that were were successful on had everything going wrong (slow to respond to meds, shipping issues with trigger shot, timing falling right around the holidays)...I felt like it was a total bust but somehow resulted in our beautiful DS! IF is certainly a roller coaster. Just know that it can work and try not to think about the statistics too much...they're just depressing. Best of luck!

  • It took 6 IUIs to get me pregnant - but it happened :)

My successful cycle was with Follistim, careful monitoring (blood and u/s), and trigger.

I tried 1 natural, 3 Clomid, 1 Femara + Follistim and finally - just Follistim.

Even after the expense of 6 IUIs, it was still less than half the cost of one IVF cycle for me so it was definitely worth it to keep trying.  I was 100% OOP (thanks to our 'Murrican views on infertility) and this is what made most sense for me.  Doing IUI after IUI sucks enormously, but don't rule out the possibility of getting pregnant.  Sure, it's only a 15-20% chance each try but statistically after 6 IUIs the success rate is something like 86%.

  • I got pg on iui#2 using clomid for Ds. The second time around we did 3 Clomid iuis, 3 menopur IUIs plus a few cancelled cycles. Then 2 femara iui cycles. And got pg from the 2nd femara iui with twins. We are mfi, with low count.
    Diagnosed MFI- low sperm count
DS-Born 7/27/11 After 2 years of IF we have our little man
    TTC#2 January 2013
    11 Medicated cycles gave us
    B/G Twins born 10/8/14 @ 32 weeks
  • I had 7 IUIs to get pg with ds#2 (none of which worked).  I ended up having a lap and "taking a break from treatment for a couple cycles" and got pg 2 cycles after the lap.

So...never give up.  Even if the IUIs don't work it may be a matter of just doing something else.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~
