Back labor?

Has anyone had back labor before? I did not have it last time around, so I don't know what it feels like. Was it in your lower back? Mid or upper back? Did it come in waves like regular contractions? Today I've been having some serious back pain, but it is in the middle of my back, and sort of on the sides. I didn't think much of it earlier today and figured it was just typical aches and pains. But, tonight it has been coming in waves that last about a minute or so, more like contractions. I started wondering if this could actually be the start of back labor. I am 37.5 weeks, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. I am going to start timing it and call the doctor if it gets to the point I need to. In the meantime I just wondered if anyone had any experience with back labor that could tell me how it felt. Thanks!

Re: Back labor?

  • I think you are right to call your doctor. I had back labor with my other 2 pregnancies. It has been a few years, but I remember it being mostly lower back pain. For my first, it preceded my water breaking by about 12 hrs and then I had to be induced because labor wasn't starting. For my 2nd, I woke up with back pain and had irregular contractions for a couple hrs. My OB decided for me to go in to be checked and on the way there, labor became very real. I arrived at L&D 10cm dilated and had her 10 min later!

  • Mine was an ache across my lower back. I had never been in labor before but knew right away what was happening. I noted the time of the first one and 20 min later another hit.

Maybe try drinking a glass of water and laying on your left side to see if they stop.

  • My back labor was consistent. It was like non stop extreme pressure. My lo was sunny side up though. Like pp said you can always call and see what your OB says.
  • Thank you ladies! I laid down and drank some water and it finally stopped last night. If it starts again, I will have a better idea of what's going on though.
  • I see that stopped so that is good! For future reference, my son was sunny side up and it was constant pain/pressure in my lower back.
  • I had back labor with DS. He was sunny side up as well. They would come just like contractions but I only ever felt it in my back and sides. A doula friend of mine told me after the fact that one of the tricks to turn him was to put an ice pack on my lower back. I'd check out spinning babies as well.

  • My doctor hasn't mentioned if the baby is sunny side up. The last ultrasound I had at 34 weeks, he was head down and facing the right way. Can they tell just by feeling your stomach if the baby is facing the wrong way?
