The twins (NICU mentioned)

edited October 2014 in October 2014 Moms
I am really exhausted so I am just copying and pasting this from my Nov mom's FB group.

Update: The good and the bad.

Katherine and Nathaniel were born at 3:40pm on Oct 14th. Nathaniel weighed in at 6lb 2oz and Katherine at 5lbs 9oz. Both struggled with low blood sugar from the beginning and were kept in the nursery for monitoring during the first few hours. They were allowed to room in with me for a short period of time before I noticed Katherine having an episode in which she went ridged and seemed like she stopped breathing. By the time the nurse arrived Katherine was fine. However they took both her and Nathaniel back to the nursery for monitoring and both were having episodes of apnea in which they were struggling to recover from. They moved my sweet babies over to the NICU near dinnertime on the 15th. All tests show that the babies are ok, but classified as immature for 37 weeks. The apnea episodes have stopped for both but Katherine still has some periods of breathing issues in which her oxygen levels do not rise as quickly as they would like. Both are on room oxygen and monitors and will continue to stay in the NICU until they are 5 days free from any episodes.

We are struggling with breastfeeding but I am able to pump and they get most of their meals from me with a little formula. They are feisty and doing well in all other regards. They have moved them both to bassinets so we are able to go in and help with care and assessments. Basic stuff like taking temperatures and changing diapers but it helps it seem normal.

Here is a picture from the newborn photo shoot that we did shortly before Katherine had her first episode.
