Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone else getting sick?

Hi Ladies -

I'm about 4 weeks along (yes, very early!) and I'm already sick. This happened in my last pregnancy as well. Anyone have a miracle cure? I have asthma and this cold is sitting in my lungs. I'm hesitant to use my albuterol since it's class c. My doc said it's fine, but I'm looking for a more holistic approach.

I'm using a neti pot which helps with congestion.

Tx!

**UPDATE** - Hi ladies - I've been using humidifiers like a boss and it's really been helping me out. I have a warm one next to my bed at night and a mini cool one on my desk at work. Highly recommend!

Re: Anyone else getting sick?

  • Me me me! In fact, the ferocity with which this cold hit me was an early clue that maybe I was pregnant. I've also been using a neti pot and drinking a lot of herbal tea with honey.

  • Holy crap me too. I got my flu shot well before getting preggos, so it was an early sign here too. Also drinking tea/honey. I might start adding ginger to my tea as well. Might have DH make me some soup - ha! I just read an article that miso soup has great healing properties because it is fermented.

I am allergic to cold medicine so I can't take anything for them.  I manage to get through colds by taking tylenol for any pain or fever.  For congestion, I take warm showers and use the towel over the head with a bowl of hot water (often with peppermint or lemon) to breathe in the steam.  I also would second the tea, but check with your dr about which teas are safe.  Some herbal teas (like chamomile) are by and large not considered to be safe, but some doctors say they are fine.  I chose to stick to peppermint, ginger, and lemon teas or decaf black tea.  Also, remember to drink way more water/clear fluids than you think you want to and rest as much as you can.

ETA: And yes, soup is great.  Chicken soup in particular is supposed to help.  This article is about the science that has been done on it.

  • I had the flu all of last week . . . nothing like being sick to make you miserable. Unfortunately, I didn't get my BFP until after it cleared up so I took the Alka-Seltzer Flu medicine for the worst days before I found out.

You could try Vicks Vapor Rub though, I know it can help depending on the source of congestion.

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.

  • All natural! Tea with lemon and honey. The neti pot with solution. Foot bath with thieves essential oil and detoxing Epsom salt. Then diffuse/apply thieves oil with lemon oil and peppermint oil. Clears it up and no drugs. Works for me :) especially thieves oil and foot baths. I usually use Airborne but is not safe for pg gals :(

  • I had it really bad the past week & a half. I'm 34wks, but I was living on Claritin, Zyrtec & Benadryl. Finally I had one of the docs at work check me out, turns out I had an ear infection with the congestion. So I was given antibiotics.

I know 1st Tri is scary, but pay attention to & listen to your body. I also agree to look into herbal stuff, it's tricky as to what is and isn't recommended.

  • Is wildly sick for a week around beta testing. I actually took a few cold showers to bring my fever down when Tylenol wasn't enough. As PP have said, loss of fluids and rest. I took antihistamines, but check with your doctor first. Hope you feel better soon!!!

  • **knocking on wood**

This is the first pregnancy (out of 4 total) that I haven't gotten a terrible cold at the very beginning.  I remember the first time going to the pharmacy to plead for some solution that was safe.  Claritin is what he told me to take... it did help a bit, although not at all holistic.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!
  • It's not natural or holistic but twice daily zofran was the only way I could function until week 20.

  • The day after I found out I was pregnant I had a sore throat followed by congestion. Lots of fluids and the Neti pot or saline rinses helped. Feel better!

  • I'm impressed with all of you who can do the Neti pot. It's like water boarding myself. Illegal at Guantanamo bay I'm sure ;)

  • Thanks ladies! My doc said to use my inhaler and Claritin if it gets bad. Last night I actually used robitussin too because it was getting hard to breathe. Seeing the doc tomorrow.

Btw, the Neti pot is awesome but it does take some practice LOL
