Half birthday cake?

I saw on another group people were having half birthday parties and letting their LOs have a cake smash? Is this normal? I had never heard of such a thing. Is this a harmless idea? I never thought to give my DD cake already she's been tasting "baby" solids since 4 months.

No way should a 6 month old eat cake. I plan to take a picture on her half birthday, if I don't forget. That's the extent of my plans :)

  • There is never a bad reason for cake. I say make the cake (or buy), take a picture then eat the cake yourself. 6 months is way to young for cake.
  • We had a half birthday (mostly to celebrate Ryan and I surviving 6 months and our kids being alive).  Safe to say I will never have another half birthday as long as I live.  It was so much work, and I had only planned on like three people coming but 20 came.  Half drove over an hour to come...

I didn't offer them cake.  I gave them veggies and some messy purees, but that is it.  I made cupcake for the guest.

My half birthday is Christmas Day! So I get presents! Win for me! Seriously though, DD's is tomorrow and we will take her pics and that's about it.
Ha!  Mine too.  B-day twins! :)

I think SO and I ate some brownies on LO's half birthday, but that was just because he and I wanted them.
  • My niece thinks her birthday is every month, we correct it is not, however her mom passed away when she was 3 & 1/2, two years ago november, and we did a 1/2 birthday, more to make us all feel better, but we do it every 6 months now, because she understands, and we make it about her mom too...she gets like a cupcake and a little something from Target dollar section, not like a cake and a party lol.
  • We totally bought a cake for my sons half bday and ate it ourselves. Way too busy this time around but it was fun
Last time. Good excuse to eat cake :) and no f-ing way did we give him any. That's just crazy

  • HALF birthday cake?  Ain't nobody got time for that.

With DS1 we did a photo shoot and had a date night for us.   No cake.  I struggled with even giving him cake at a year, let alone 6 months.  At 6 months, that kid hadn't had a drop of anything but breastmilk, I sure wasn't giving him sugar, food dye, and processed crap.
For DS2, I *think* we managed to take a picture of him.  I think if you manage to have a smash cake or party for your kid's half birthday that you have too much time on your hands.
