Torticollis

Does anyone have a little one who tends to favor turning their head to one side? My 8 week old tends to favor the right side
He definitely turns his head to the left to noises and on his own but I'm concerned that we always seem to have to move his head to a more straight-lined position when he is resting. I've heard babies can develop flat spots from this and now I'm paranoid he will :)

Anyone experience this? What did you do? We have his 2 mo check up Wednesday afternoon and I will talk to the pediatrician.

Re: Torticollis

  • DS favor his right too. So he rotates to the right and side bends to the left. I stretch him the opposite ways. I also put him on the play mat with all toys to his left to encourage him to turn his head. With tummy time, I dangle toys to his left as well.
I'm a PT (adult not pediatrics) and so I'm comfortable stretching him. I promise you won't break them! Just be gentle.

  • DD2 was diagnosed with it, as well as plagiocephaly. We decided against the helmet, but did PT and it did wonders.

DS always looks to the left and lays on that side. Now I'm going to ask the pedi about it.

  • DD1 had torticollis. I noticed her flat spot at one month old and the doctor felt her neck and determined her muscles were tight on one side. We started PT at 2 months and it worked great. We only went once a month and did the stretches at home. She avoided a helmet and finished PT at 13 months and has not had any problems since.

  • DS is the same, he definitely favors turning his head to the right and we are frequently trying to correct it. He will turn his head to the left on his own, but likes to sleep or lay with it facing right. He also nurses better on my left breast and didn't even connect the two until and LC suggested it. She suggested seeing a chiropractor specialising in infants but I wanted to wait to talk to my pedi. However when I had his 2 mo I was basically told that since he can turn his head all the way to the left on his own it wasn't a concern. He said we will just keep an eye on it. DS isn't showing any signs of a flat spot, but I am still worried about, hoping he gets better with time.

  • Pediatrician diagnosed her with it at our 2 month appt, after I asked about how to look for flat spots. He gave us a script for PT, we've had one appointment and so far we've just been told to do tummy time (husband was the one who took her, he says 1st appt was just to observe). I've also been trying to turn her head when I put her down to sleep, some days it works others it doesn't.

Our pediatrician didn't seem hugely worried about it.

  • I noticed DS1 favoring one of his sides; he ended up with both torticollis and plagiocephaly. We went to physical therapy from about 4months to 6 months and he had his helmet from May to September. Despite being totally down about about it, some of the cutest pictures we have of him are with that helmet. And I never worried about him face planting. We had so many more ouchies once the helmet came off.

  • Yesyes...old(ish) post, but I wonder if anyone here has followed up on their earlier concerns or what their doctor said or has anyone had a diagnosis of torticollis and now requires physical therapy or a helmet?

**I been asked a couple of questions this last month re: my experience with helmets and torticollis so thought that maybe we could address some of these concerns more publicly so as to encourage one another (/cue rainbow farts)

  • We go to PT twice a month and stretch at home all the time. Torticollis is almost gone. Find out in 2 weeks if DD needs helmet (probably will). She only tummy sleeps now though.

  • We have been going to PT once a week since mid August . Our little ones torticollis has resolved and the small flat spot he had is almost gone. We just saw his pediatrician last week and she and the PT agree he won't need a helmet.. We are thrilled! Now that he is rolling on to his belly and starting to sit up it's amazing how fast everything has improved!

PT has been great. They taught us stretches and exercises to do and now are helping us with rolling from belly to front (he can't do it!) and sitting up.
We are going for 1 more month 1x week and then mid nov will go once a month for a check up until Jan
