Put on maternity leave early!!

so I had my first day back at work today after my hospital visit with Pre term contractions and I was there for about an hour and I started feeling them again! Off to my doctor I go and she tells me since I've had threatened early labor and it's now happening again she is no longer happy for me to continue working. She checked me and I'm not dialated at all but she said my cervix is soft and short and that it shouldn't be yet. Anyone know what this actually means I have no clue. So anyways I'm 28 weeks and now on maternity leave so this sucks financially but I'll do whatever I can to keep him in.

  • Did she do a cervical scan?

  • Soft and short sounds to me like synonyms for effacement. It refers to the thinning out that happens to the cervix. In order to deliver you should be 10cm dialated (which, thankfully, you are not) and 100% effaced.
  • I've had contractions and shortened cervix, too. They put me on meds to stop 'em. So far it's worked, I haven't had any since that first bout of them.  I'm sorry you had to stop working, hopefully that helps the contractions!

  • So sorry this is happening. I'm in a similar boat. Was having contractions, checked me, no dilation. Your cervix should be longer than 3 cm mine was at a 3.2 . No leave yet, just had to cut my hours from 40+ to 20 -_-

Did they do the ffn test?
  • I understand the frustration of going on leave early. I was forced to go on leave by my employer the first pregnancy at 28 weeks. There wasn't much to do be sit around and watch TV, so I took up sewing.
  • So very sorry!  Hang in there.. I just got put on bed rest at home also.  I know frustrating and disappointing.  Hope your baby stays put!

  • Thanks everyone. At least it gives me plenty of time to get everything ready. She just did a vaginal check and told me it was soft and short. And that his head was super low.
  • I'm sorry you're going through all of this. I completely understand not wanting to leave work this early, but hopefully that will help improve things. It will be nice to have time to get ready for your LO like you mentioned.

Hoping for the best and sending good thoughts to you and your LO!!

  • The same thing is happening to me! I've had labor contractions for 10 days now. The first day of serious contractions the hospital gave me a medication to stop them. When they returned as soon as the medication wore off they are just having me live through them. No bed rest for me yet. But I still have lots of doctors apointments to make sure nothing has changed with my cervix.
  • Yea they gave me 2 shots for his lungs And nafetapine (I think it's called) to stop the contractions.
