monitor or no?

has anyone got LO in another room are are not using a monitor? we want to move Jessica, and don't have one yet. I kinda don't think we need one as we would hear her if she cried but not if she fussed.

  • We don't have a monitor

  • I have a video monitor but I think the need one for depends on your home.

My house is split levels, 4 overall and there is just no way I would hear LO if I was anywhere but the floor he was on . But I think in an apt or bungalow it would be fine

  • We don't have one. Our rooms are next door to each other.
  • I don't have a monitor. I have very small house. I spend a lot of time at my parents and their house is huge and I don't use a monitor their either.

  • We have one although we probably don't need one but it gives me peace of mind as I've slept through some loud things before and I'm scared I wouldn't hear her cry. It's also great for naps so I can be outside if it's nice outside.
  • Our house is one level, but split plan so both my kids (dd is 2.5) have monitors. I like the idea that I could hear them sleep like they are in the room with me. I do think it affects my sleep though. I wake up as soon as LO starts to toss and turn.

  • We bed share so don't use one at night, but we do have an audio monitor that is used every day. Like Lala said - it's mostly for naps and after she goes to bed but I'm still up. I like to be able to hang out outside or do stuff in other parts of my house. I honestly can't imagine not having one.

Now that she's more mobile I'm half inclined to get a video monitor as well! I never, ever thought I'd want one of those...
  • We have one. Our house is small but we have fans going at night for noise. It doesn't hurt to have even a basic one for peace of mind. Do what's right for you!
  • We've never has a monitor for either of our kids and it's been fine.

This. And man do I wish there were somewhere in my house that I couldn't hear him cry.

  • We've got one.  LO is upstairs.  Even when I stayed in the guest room upstairs when he was younger, it was nice to have the video monitor to see if the cries were awake upset cries or asleep and rolling around trying to go back to sleep cries.

The sound monitors themselves suck though.  Video is the way to go, if you're going to get one.
  • We didn't use one for DD1 or DS, but DD2 is on the other side of the house, so it's necessary.

  • thanks for the input. The feeling I get from feedback is not necessary but if I get one, video is the best! lol.

Our place is split level, with our room being a little distance from LO's but I know I would hear her crying. And I'm not the heaviest of sleepers, but even DH woke the other day when she was crying in our room, and he was in the spare room (soon to be hers), so that is a good sign.

thanks guys, I think Ill see how we go without and can always get one later on!

  • We just moved DD to her own room. We have a video monitor because when she goes to bed we are still downstairs. Plus we sleep with a noise fan so we needed a monitor to hear her.

  • We have a video monitor, we bedshare so it's used during naps or after he's asleep and we are still hanging out. The range is good so I can go outside with my dog/ check the mail/ trash duty. Also, it may save you some trips to check on LO if fussing since you can see if they are just wrestling around or in distress.
  • We dig our monitor to be able to see if he's sleeping or playing quietly in the crib; both are obviously lovely moments of mommy time, but playing doesn't equal sleep and it's nice to know when he's had a 30 min nap vs 45 min and so on.

We also turn the sound down all the way when we're just across the hall cause we leave doors open and can hear him just fine, but again, the video is helpful to see how awake he is and if he's whining and kicking his feet and losing it or whining and winding down etc.

I would say if you're going to use any kind of cry it out methods, a video monitor is essential.
  • I have a sound monitor only and have never had any issues.

  • I have a nice monitor. It's Still in the box... Lol

And I'm considering using it in the goat barn this spring so I will hear when my goats are in labor... If it reaches
  • I've decided not to bother. Cant afford video, and I think going from past experience I'll wake up anyway.

Didn't end up moving her yet, DH couldn't be bothered pulling apart her cot to put it back together. I think she will end up sleeping in our room until we are pregnant with No 2

  • So we just bought a Samsung video monitor at BBB on Friday, we weren't going to, we have an Angel Care monitor, sound only, but we like to be able to see her, and not have to open her door.  We have a small (1200sqf) house, so it's not necessary, but it is awesome and we've only had it two days....we got it for $200 with their mobile 20% off coupon.
