baby carriers

What baby carriers do you recommend? This is baby #2 for me, but my daughter turns 12 in two weeks and it's been a long time since I used a baby carrier. I'm going to breastfeed (I don't know if that makes a difference) and I'm at a total loss. All my friends that recently had babies neither breastfeed or baby carry and I plan on doing both.
Sorry it's a little long, but I'm really curious and very interested in all of your opinions. Thanks in advance. :)

  • I love my Moby for when they are really tiny, and then start using a soft structured carrier. Mine is the Lillebaby Everywear, which I think is similar to an Ergo. I've had mine for a few years and I think they have different/better ones now. I was able to nurse in it pretty easily. I don't remember ever nursing with baby in the Moby, but found it was easy to take them out and use the Moby as cover and then slip them back in.
  • The K'Tan is a great wrap if you don't want the hassle and extra fabric. It's a lot easier to use than a moby. The down side is that it's size-specific. I also have an ergo that I love for longer trips. It's very comfortable. I plan to buy a ring sling this time as well.

  • Thank you ladies!
  • This time I'll get a good ring sling and use the old ergo.

I personally don't like the Moby. It's too hot and awkward. I may look into a ring sling this time. We used a Petunia Pickle Bottom carrier from 1 to 5 months, when we switched to the Ergo. We used the Ergo so much, and our son loved it. Ever since he started walking he doesn't want to use it :( I never breastfed in a carrier, because I found it uncomfortable and I felt exposed.

  • K'tan is pretty awesome! I like it better than the Moby. No extra fabric! And the Ergo when they get a little bigger
  • Sakura Bloom ring slings are my favorite, and the Ergo for when we hike.
  • I SUPER LOVE my Mai Tai. I recommend sling for newborn but after that you just can't beat the Mai tai. My two year old still rides in it.
  • First of all, thanks @OP for making this thread.

I've gotten an ergo (hand me down), and was told even with the infant insert the neck support really isn't there. But not sure I want to splurge on the baby bjorn just to have a carrier for that newborn stage..
I'll be looking into the wraps mentioned above

So at least 5 of my friends used the ergo (avid fans that you'd think they get paid to advertise) & tried to dual purpose with the infant insert. None of them actually recommend it, saying the support, isn't really there. The ones that need a carrier either got a wrap or baby bjorn, the others ended up just lugging around the infant carrier/ car seat

  • I love the Kinderpack. I think it is a great SSC. They can be a bit tricky to get, though, as they are in pretty high demand and made in small batches. I also had a Boba 3g that I used with DD from when she was a newborn until 12 months and I liked that very much as well. There are a lot of great SSCs out there. I also have a girasol ring sling. It's beautiful, but honestly, I never really got the hang of it and always grabbed for a SSC instead. I know many people love ring slings for the early days, though.

  • I used a hand-me-down Bijorn for when they were tiny and then an ergo when they were bigger. Worked fine for me. I tried a sling out for a bit but it made me nervous. Maybe I didn't use it right or have the right one.

  • I have a Moby and Maya ring sling. They are both great for different reasons. The Moby is very easy to use but gets hot in the summer time. The ring sling is hard to adjust once on, but much less hot to wear in the summer and I can get more use out of it as baby starts to get bigger.  I have lots of friends with Ergos who rave about them and I may just splurge and get one since I don't really need to buy much else this time around.

I urge you to do research on ergonomic baby carriers. There are some that are very bad for their hips.

I'm echoing this suggestion and adding that you should also research how to position the baby and which direction they should face.

  • I used a Moby and something similar to a Moby that was custom made. The custom made one didn't have quite as wide of fabric and was a little easier to use.  I bought the Moby for a trip to Disney because the wider fabric would be more covering for nursing.  I hadn't nursed in the carrier until this point (5 mos old), and found it sort of challenging.  I'm sure if I'd practiced more it would have been easier, not to mention I was really weak when we were there because I had the stomach flu.
  • I have 3, and love them all for different reasons. The Moby was great when DD was just a little squish. Then we moved to the Ergo, which she loved going for walks and naps in. Now that she's bigger, we use the ring sling all the time when we're at the grocery store.

  • FTM mom here, but I nannied in the past for an infant and LOVED the Bjorn. It was so simple, the baby seemed to really like it, and I always felt like she was really secure.

  • Love my Boba, take it everywhere.  DD is almost 29 months and still rides in it.

  • The ergo!! But, i didnt discover it until my son was older, so i am excited to start using it sooner this time. I guess i have to get a newborn insert though.

I used the bjorn, and the moby, and nothing compared to the Ergo.

  • Wait, so dont get the newborn insert for the Ergo?

  • I tried a bunch of wraps, and they just weren't comfortable for me.
I loved my Ergo and used it a lot with the infant insert. Now that DS is a  25 lb toddler I have a Toddler Tula  and love it and it is so much more comfy then then Ergo is with him.

I will use my Ergo this time around until baby is big enough for the Tula, but if I was starting over I would probably look into the infant Tula .
  • I have a Moby and Beco Gemini and liked them both. The Gemini was great for when she was just a bit older and HAD to be facing outwards for short time periods of time. And we still use it occasionally with the back carry option.

The best thing to do is try them out and figure out which works best for you!
I suggest going to a Babywearing Meeting! Check out https://www.babywearinginternational.org/about-bwi/chapters/ and find a group! Most, if not all chapters have a lending library (try it before you buy it) and Certified Babywearing Educators that can help you get that perfect fit in any carrier. There is a fee to check out carriers, but meetings are (or should be) free to attend.

Children are a blessing from the Lord!

  • I also don't recommend the moby or k'tan, they are thick and hot and can be difficult to wrap with for a newbie because of the stretch. I know that's what they are geared towards, but I have found a woven wrap to be much easier. A ring sling is a great choice because you will get so much use out of one. I also love my ergo and that has lasted me a super long time as well.

  • We used the moby for a while but it's very cumbersome and hot.  Also, transitioning baby in and out for diaper changes is a royal pain.  Having one or two clips to get baby in and out is definitely much easier.

  • I made a moby type wrap for my first, I bought two lighter gauze wraps that I used equally, and we have a toddler Tula that we still use often.

  • We're going to go with with the chicco carrier/stroller set. Jogging stroller though not regular. But you can get the regular stroller if you like. They are also customizable with colors as well. Look at target!
  • Another recommendation for the Beco Gemini.  It is my favorite carrier.  I got it when DD1 was around 6 months.  I wore her around London in it at 18 months so we didn't have to deal with a stroller and DH used it with her until she was 2.  I used it again with DD2 really early on since the Gemini doesn't require an infant insert.  I also like that it has an option to face outward.  I'm excited to use it again.

  • Ergo hands down the best!  All the weight is on your back (not pulling on your shoulders like a Bjorn).  The lille carrier is really nice too.  Just like an ergo but you have an option of wearing the baby forward facing like the Bjorn

We had a Moby (way to hot to use during summer where we are), an Ergo (love...but not at first/the infant insert) and a Rockin' Baby sling/pouch (it has a zipper to allow you to adjust size a little but not as much as a ring sling).

This time, I am hoping to add a Beco Gemini/Butterfly/Mei Tai and a ring sling (yay options!). I really liked the ease and security of a structured carrier and would like to use it from the start(I suspect that may be important while running after the preschooler) and the pouch worked well, but I wanted to be able to adjust it more.

It was fairly ease and discreet to nurse with the sling/pouch although we only used it for the first 6-ish months, not quite as easy (or discreet, but you can just toss a burp cloth/swaddle/shawl/scarf over the munchkin) in the ergo, but still definitely doable.  The first few times are a bit awkward, but that pretty much describes everything with nursing =)
  • I bought a K'tan to use when DS was a newborn but he ended up being on an apnea monitor so it was never used. I looked into Tula carriers and really wanted one but didn't ever get one. This time around I plan on using the K'tan and then getting a Tula.

  • We have a Moby and an ergo. I plan to try the Solly Baby Wrap when this one's an infant because I was never thrilled with the Moby. But I loved the ergo for 4+ months.
