STM doula's?

Has anyone here used a doula for a previous birth and if so how was your experience? Do you think it was helpful and/or worth the expense? I have been attending birth classes provided thru the hospital I will be delivering at but to be honest the classes are making me feel more nervous instead of better about my upcoming delivery. I'm left feeling like I will have little or no control over how they choose for me to labor/give birth. I am using a midwife instead of an OB but she only delivers at this one hospital so I'm kind of stuck with the location. I'm hoping a doula will help me feel more at ease in what I already anticipate will be an uncomfortable environment. Would love to hear pros/cons from those who have used a doula in the past.

Re: STM doula's?

  • I had doula with my first. My biggest piece of advice is to make sure your personalities mesh well. I loved MY doula, but her back up (who was on when I went into labor) drove me nuts. I wound up laboring long enough that my original doula was there when I delivered, but it wasn't worth the aggravation in the interim. I do think doulas are valuable, especially if you are alone or your SO isn't comfortable with the process. I hope you find someone you like! Don't be afraid to interview them throroughly- they will be there on the most important day of your life.

  • I loved my doula and we've hired her again for this birth too. While my midwife was awesome, my doula was the one who helped my husband best help me, and to ask those questions during labor that I couldn't because I was dealing with contractions. She was an extra pair of hands to help out during my lengthy pushing attempts, and she took beautiful photos during labor, birth, and the minutes following. She helped me throughout third trimester with visits to talk about labor, birth, and breastfeeding, and she met with us two weeks post partum to check in, recap my birth experience and process everything. Good luck!

  • I did not hire a doula with my first but I slightly regret that now. The reason is because I read books and attended classes and I still felt like I knew nothing about laboring and birth and totally reasonable questions and/or requests I could make at the hospital etc.

I didn't particularly have a bad experience but it would've really been nice to have someone on my team who knows whats going on and has time to talk to me about it.

I recommend to my friends to hire 1 if they can find someone they like and can afford it.

  • Thanks ladies.  I met with one the other day and I am meeting with another tomorrow.  I think this will definitely be the way to go for me.
