Gliders or rocking chair?

Which do you prefer? And BTDT moms who have some input? Greatly appreciated :)

Re: Gliders or rocking chair?

  • I prefer my glider.  I find it so relaxing.  My DD is almost 4 and we still rock her in it everynight.  When I'm at someone else's house, like my parents, I have to use their rocking chairs and I find it a PITA.

  • We have a bunch of wooden rockers and while they work fine I definitely recommend getting a seat cushion no matter what you get. Things were kind of sore and I ended up putting a pillow on the rocker so I could sit. I don't mind rockers, and DS still has one in his room that we sit on while we read bedtime stories every night. My favorite chair last time was actually a padded armchair/rocker in our living room - note: not sold at a baby store (expect a ridiculous mark up) because it had a nice cushioned seat, back, and arm rests. I put a foot stool up in front of it and that worked perfectly. We moved last year and that was one of the things that didn't come with us. Luckily my parents recently decided to get new furniture and we just got my mom's laz boy rocker/recliner. I'm so excited to camp out in it during newborn days.

  • I have both like these, and the glider is way more comfortable IMO. It probably depends on what kind you get for both. I would definitely get the rocking ottoman too. I practically lived in that glider for nursing.

I'm a FTM but in bought this glider used ($30!)... It is amazing. I love the gliding automan too. I already live in it so I imagine thing won't change after January :)
  • Glider. No question. And the gliding ottoman is really nice to have.

  • I want to get a nice sized lazyboy so that on the occasion the baby just wants to sleep in my arms I have something comfortable enough that I can sleep in too.

  • We had basically a padded rocking chair (I guess it was considered a glider) but honestly it got uncomfortable over time. We actually just ordered a new one that is more like a over stuffed chair that rocks. You spend a lot of time in that chair so make it comfy!
  • We got a La-Z-Boy rocker recliner, too.  Same as some PP's said, I want to be able to move it downstairs later & use it with the rest of our living room or den furniture.  And it's so comfortable!  Later in my 3rd tri last time, my heartburn sucked so bad, I slept in the recliner for several nights.
Myles was so pumped about the baby . . . until he figured out he'd have to share all his toys!!!

  • We have a glider, but I really prefer rocking chairs. Maybe it's because my glider is old and was handed down to us...?

We plan on trying a few gliders out at BRU, but as of right this second I want a rocking chair. But I agree with PP about a pillow for the chair, if it isn't an upholstered bottom.

  • We have a wooden rocking chair in DD's room. It's old (it was my grandparents', and I repainted it), and even though I bought chair pads for it, it's still not very comfortable. I love the way it looks, though! The arms were placed in a way that made it impossible for me to nurse DD in it, so we moved an additional chair from Ikea in the room for me to use while she was still breastfeeding. We use the rocking chair now to read bedtime stories, and it's fine for that.

We did the same! Loving our new La Z Boy and the fact that it fits right in with our living room.

  • I've always preferred my lazy boy recliner. never purchased a glider/rocker.
Still immune to tickers. Polite Canadian 99% of the time. SAHM of 7 soon to be 8. I read more than I post.
  • I love my glider, got it at BRU and best investment for the nursery IMO. We will move it into living room once kids are older which is why I wanted it to be versatile for both rooms. There's a pic of it on the nursery photo's page but I can never get pics to post while I'm not mobile bumping, which I'm not right now!
  • We had a lazy boy with our 1st. We had already had it for many years before he came around and it was in our living room. It was a life saver. It rocked and reclined. I logged many hours in that thing and so did DH.

It was super beatup and gross so when we moved a couple years ago we tossed it. I am thinking of buying another one and if we dont spend the money on that ill deff get a glider. My mom has a beautiful rocking chair that my grandmother gave her when she had my brother. Its a beautiful well made piece of furinture but its just not that comfortable.

Id imagine that you will want to put your feet up.
  • I also vote for the lazy-boy style rocking recliner. We have one from Walmart that is SO comfortable and cushy. I have slept in it comfortable on a night that DD was sick. Ours also vibrates in the seat and back so that's nice! We got a glider originally, but I didn't find it comfortable and I really wanted the back high enough so DH and I could both rest our head comfortable, the gliders were too short for us.

  • The glider in the baby's room and the lazyboy in the living room sometimes sneak downstairs to the lazy boy when heartburn is unbearable and need to sleep in the sitting position. Used both for the OS
  • We have a Lazy Boy which is quite comfortable. I believe it was handed down to us from a family member when we were expecting last time. My husband uses it all the time now. So we got a second one for upstairs. It is a little smaller buy functionally the same.

That said, I found that I would just plop down anywhere I felt like it and feed the baby and often that would be on the couch in front of the tv (helpful for staying awake in the wee hours) so maybe it just depends on the personal preference but I'm not sure that special chair purchases are always necessary.

  • That's what I was afraid of! The rocker we could use in any room around the house, as to a glider, it's kinda strictly bound to the nursery.. I'm a ftm and my husband and I are thinking about more kids down the line but idk about storage :/
  • I love my gliders, they are so comfortable and relaxing! But that's not say that a rocking chairs can't be nice and comfy too. I really think it just depends on what kind of rocking chair/ glider you have. IMO these are one of the things worth spending a little more on - get something that you love and that can use for many years.

  • We have a glider and a rocker/recliner in our living room. Glider is used more, but I like both. Wooden rocker also in the nursery. That chair is used the least.
  • I like the glider but unfortunately dh claimed it for himself because of his bad back, he likes to recline. So I guess if it's too comfy you might not get exclusive use of it :-)
