WWYD? Telling children related

I'm 12w 3d and still haven't told my kids (5yo and 2.5yo) that I'm expecting.

This coming Tuesday I have an appt for the NT scan.  However, I have developed a rash called pityriasis rosea (diagnosed by FP doctor).  Of course there isn't a ton of info out there on it, but it is thought to the result of a virus.  There is one study stating that if you develop it before 15 weeks you have a 62% chance of miscarriage, but the population of the study was very small and had the rash very severely.  The doctor I saw said it shouldn't affect the pregnancy, but admitted that he hasn't done OB in 2 years. I do plan on discussing this with MFM on Tuesday, as well.

We were going to tell our kids after this Tuesday, assuming everything is ok.  Now, I'm wondering if we should wait a little longer.  I think my 5yo has a pretty good idea I'm pregnant, as she has been stuffing dolls up her shirt and pretending to have another baby sister.  She also asks why my stomach is getting bigger.

What would you do in my situation? Tell them if everything is good on Tuesday or wait until after the 15 week point?  TIA.

  • Thanks for your response.  I think I'll hold off a little longer.  I'm not sure how I would un-explain that.

  • @JAP09-02 I had that last year.  Fortunately it was before getting pregnant.  I had the rash from elbow to knees and across my entire torso.  They tried steriods and everything but it really has to go away on it's own.  I think I had it for about 2 months and it iched so much.  I am really sorry you are getting it now!!  The only good part is that usually you only get it once in a life time.  You really have my sympathy!!! I'll be thinking of you.

  • Thanks @topaz7777. It didn't itch at first, but now that it is crusting over (gross I know) it is starting to itch.  I think I haven't been real aggressive with getting my OB to look at it because I know there really isn't much to be done.  It's kind of just a hope for the best situation.  Hopefully, I'll get good news tomorrow, the wait has been hard.
  • Mine felt like hives.  I went several days before going to the doctor, but the second she saw it, she knew exactly what it was.  It started on my stomach and just progressed eventually.  I hope you get lucky and yours is quick!!

  • I'm not telling my 2.5yo and 4yo until I am 20+ weeks.

They don't have the ability to process what a loss would be and I frankly don't want to deal with all the talk about the baby for any more months than I have to.  My DD is chatty and would be telling every stranger we meet as well, so I'm just avoiding dealing with all that by not saying anything until closer to Christmas.
