Classes

Where did you go for child birth, breastfeeding, and CT classes? The hospital I'm delivering at charges an arm and a leg for each class. Is there a free class that I could go to - a venue to look into? I did the BRU classes - but they were so short!

ETA: CPR not CT

Re: Classes

  • CPR classes are often available at ambulance stations. You could call some places local to you, or look online at Red Cross or American heart association for community classes.

I took my bfing class at the hospital I delivered at. It's a 3 hour class and they charge $30 per couple.

  • Check around to different hospitals too. The one I work for charges $60 for breastfeeding classes and $80 for newborn care.
However, a hospital close to my house (this hospital was purchased by my hospital's healthcare system, but the transition isn't fully completed yet) only charges $12 for both a breastfeeding and newborn class! My DH is also taking a "daddy boot camp" class (makes my face cheese like this :D ) for only $20 at this same hospital.

  • Google birthing classes in your area.  We did not go with a hospital birthing or breastfeeding class, but instead went to a birthing class taught by our doula.  We paid $135 for a 5 week course and each class was 2.5 hours.  We found the class to be very informative.  Also Red Cross or American Heart Association teach CPR and it might be less expensive than the class at the hospital.

  • We are a 90 min drive from our hospital & didn't want to have to lose a lot of weekends to classes. I found a local lactation consultant who had classes at her home - it was awesome & $30. She mentioned that some insurance companies will pay for the class or reimburse (something to look into). We didn't take childbirth class but did a baby care class through our local Childbirth education association for $30 (not CPR). They did also offer local childbirth classes ($150), but they didn't fit our schedule. Good-luck!
