Pregnant after a Loss

MTHFR Gene Mutation?

Hi Ladies,

I was just diagnosed + for heterozygous MTHFR C677T. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm currently remaining calm about this as my doc said "This is good, there is no reproductive significance." I feel like he's blowing me off. The test also says "It is recommended that all patients found to have specific genetic mutations consider genetic counseling." Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks all.

Re: MTHFR Gene Mutation?

  • I have this too. It does limit your ability to produce folic acid which is very significant in pregnancy. For this reason the RE put me on Folgard to combat this condition. Women with MTHFR do experience a significantly higher number of miscarriages than women without the mutation. There are support groups on Babycenter etc. I am surprised your doctor said this. I would speak to another doctor or a RE. Some women even require Lovenex for MTHFR but that is usually for more than one copy. One copy is typically treated with baby aspirin (81mg) and Folgard/FABB.

  • Is there a genetic counselor you can speak with maybe at your local maternal fetal medicine center? Maybe they can help you specifically since there are so many types of mthfr and heterozygous and homozygous are different.

    Good luck!!

I have two copies of the MTHFR 0677T gene. I started on low dose aspirin and 2mg folate before my BFP, and lovenox once intrauterine pregnancy was confirmed.

From what I have been told and read, theories of how these genes really relate to loss greatly vary. My RE wanted to be pro-active in treatment because I had 3 losses in a row and nothing else turned up in any testing. He said they are finding the MTHFR genes with recurrent MC, but that there really isn't a lot of data to compare with woman without losses having the same gene or not. He also said there is research to support the relation between women with MTHFR and elevated homocysteine as reasoning for recurrent loss. My level has always tested normal so who knows.

I am just lurking here and saw the MTHFR subject and wanted to jump in. I too have the double copy of the C677T gene. I had three losses before we found out. In my third loss I was taking a large amount of folic acid but what the MTHFR does is it makes it so your body cannot process the folic acid into folate. For my successful pregnancy I took Neevo DHA, which gives the body the direct folate. There is also another medication called MetanX that does the same thing but Neevo was covered by my insurance. Like a PP I also took Lovenox because I also had a higher homocystein level, which could lead to clotting, most likely related to the MTHFR. I took the baby aspirin too.

You will hear a lot of doctors telling you that Folgard is enough. In my opinion, from my experience and talking with various doctors, it is not helpful with the MTHFR. There may be some here who disagree but the nurse at my RE's office told me that I may as well have been eating Skittles because that's the good the folic acid did for me. When I graduated from my RE I basically had two high risk OB choices. I chose the one who immediately said yes, you need to stay on the Neevo and you need to stay on the Lovenox. The other one said it wasn't exactly necessary so I did not go with him and never regretted the decision.

You can also get folate naturally from foods, which I did as well from things like bananas, spinach, lentils, and avocados. There are other foods and you can look them up.

You should also know that MTHFR has health implications for you that are not pregnancy related. This is something the doc I didn't go with told me so you may consider seeing a hematologist for yourself. I actually haven't gone yet but it is something I plan on doing soon.

Good luck to you and I wish you a very happy and healthy 9 months!

  • I have one of the A and one of the C (compound het.). I can't remember if the C mutation is the one about folic acid or with clotting since I have both.

I am taking a prenatal with folate instead of folic acid (my understanding is that folate is what is recommended for MTHFR) called Thorne Basic Prenatal plus the Thorne B Complex with extra folate and a 5-MTHF supplement. I buy those off Amazon. I also took baby aspirin until just recently leading up to 37 weeks. They had me stop in case of bleeding issues during birth. There is a website called MTHFR.net that has lots of information.
