The Most Interesting Woman in the World...

... is not me.

When I spoke with the Advice Nurse (as I wigged out over virtually nothing), she began listing things I should not do, including:

1. Ride a hot air balloon
2. Go deep sea diving
3. Swim with dolphins
4. Bungee jumping
5. Ride a speed boat

I laughed as she enumerated a list of things to not do. She asked me why. I said, "The most exciting thing I did today was ask for the extra value meal breakfast at McDonald's."

So tell me: How many of us are this adventurous that we have to forsake such activities?

Re: The Most Interesting Woman in the World...

  • While it is definitely not an everyday activity, I have swam with dolphins once :-) Not too hard to keep that one out of my daily routine anymore though.

  • Ummm, wow, that's quite the list!  It wouldn't occur to me to even try doing most of those things let alone on a regular day when I'm pregnant.

  • I found this:

High-altitude sports, such as hot-air ballooning and mountaineering, should also be avoided. The change in oxygen levels puts you and your baby at risk of altitude sickness.

  • Lol, that's too funny. Dh and I don't do things like that on a regular basis, but we do try to do something crazy from our bucket list every year. We just plan it for when I'm not pregnant. Or try to anyways, lol.

  • We must be getting old! Shucks, I don't have a bucket list anymore! Maybe I should make one!

  • Things i won't be able to avoid: Ride in a Speed Boat.  Not sure if a ski boat going 33mph is a "speed boat" but my H is a huge water skiier, i am his driver, and we literally bought a waterfront home on a lake yesterday.  There is no earthly way he's not going to want to go skiing over the next few months...he even has a wetsuit so he probably has 4-6 weeks of good skiing left this year.  Sigh.

It riding in a boat really all that much bumpier than riding in a car?  i don't really think so.  maybe if it was really rough on the water, but if it's rough H won't ski so...problem solved.

  • @PenguinMG we've got a cruise booked for January. Yesterday, the charter company released an awesome set of activities they've planned for our port day - giant inflatable obstacle course on the water, crazy water slides, access to a water park, open bar. I will be able to safely partake in the lunch buffet and soft serve ice cream. It'll do, I guess. haha.

I have a trip planned to Six Flags too. I enjoy roller coasters so, sadly, I'll only be able to enjoy the Fright Fest portion of the park. And I guess there will be no renewal of my season pass for next year either.

My husband owns a boat; he's an avid fisherman, but I can barely keep it together when the water is the smoothest ever..I think he drives to fast and I'm always getting tossed around the boat. Needless to say, I hardly ever get invited anymore because I whine hahah.

We've got a cruise planned in December and before the BFP zip lining, swimming with dolphins, and jet skiing were all on the to do list. Now they're off...sadz.
That would make me sad, too. Sorry :( Should still be able to go snorkeling. Ziplining with a chest harness is actually probably OK, since it's usually a controlled descent, not a freefall.... but being unfamiliar with the set up of the particular course, it's understandable why you wouldn't want to risk it.

We'll be in Tahoe in March and I'm bummed to miss out on skiing. We got a speedboat this summer for a weekend, but that won't be anything we'd do during the winter.

I'm actually an avid rock climber, and do plan to continue top roping as long as it's still fun :)

That's really sad, too. I'm kinda bummed I didn't make to SixFlags this summer before getting PG. Now it will probably be, what 10 years or so before I make it back? Boo :(

  • We went to NOLA last time I was pregnant and wanted to go on a swamp tour on an airboat. They pretty much saw my belly and pointed at the big sign that said pregnant women not allowed. (I think mostly just to cover their own butts because they said it's too bumpy and have had people complain after)
So, we did what anyone would naturally do, and found a restaurant with good appy's while our friends went lol.
  • There are other reasons not to swim with dolphins, but hey, if women take the pregnancy safety thing more seriously than the animal cruelty thing, I'm ALL for it as long as the end result is fewer people taking part in using highly intelligent, living animals as captive circus acts for photo ops and giggles!! So, yay nurse!

  • Interesting about the hot air balloon and altitude. We always go up to Lake Tahoe every winter and the altitude is much higher up there. I mean I won't be doing any snowboarding since I will (hopefully still) be pregnant, but I also don't really see how going on a hot air balloon is a sport and to me it doesn't seem any different than driving up into the mountains. Maybe I'm being illogical?

H and I are going to Disneyland next weekend so I won't be able to go on many of the rides, nbd though.

  • Belle0720, I went camping/hiking this past weekend and googled our planned 12,000-foot hike just to be sure. I learned that you're not supposed to sleep over 10,000 feet or climb over 11,000 feet while pregnant. Who knew?

  • Yes, @JimBobCooter - I should have added that. This is for women who usually live below 5,000 feet. Apparently places like Denver have their own growth charts for women who live at higher altitudes!

  • I went on a speed boat. More than once... I highly recommend not doing it... I puked everywhere... And I've ridden roller coasters prego... My kids are definitely more adventurous because of it. ;) my first is afraid of elevators...... Haha
  • The only one I've done out of those 5 is ride in a speedboat, and the last time I did that, I broke my pelvis in an accident.  (that was 9 years ago and I'm still scared to go on one!)

So nope, no extreme activities for me, pregnant or not.

  • @GASuzuki Thanks, me too!  I still have screws in there from my surgery to put it back together, and I had to go to my orthopedic surgeon last year to confirm that none of them would poke my baby in the head. (he laughed, but I thought my question was pretty legit)

Good news is that my pelvis should be just fine for a normal pregnancy and birth. :)

  • I'm going on a trip where I'll be hiking at 7000ft, zip lining and white water rafting. My obs raised an eyebrow but said it's totally fine before 12 weeks. This is not far from my usual pre-pregnancy activity level. I think once B.B arrives I'll have to slow down a bit.
