Which RCS date would you pick?

So...I am due on the 27th of December. This will be my 3rd and final child and will be born via repeat C-section. I have 2 options for RCS dates and am having a difficult time deciding between the two. So, I thought I'd put it out there and see what others would do?!?!?

Background - I only went into labor with my 1st child 2 days before my due date and had a RCS with #2 2 days before my due date (so I have technically never made it past 39w5d...which would be Christmas day this time). I have 2 boys already who I would obviously LOVE to be with on Christmas morning. The oldest will be almost 7 (so he knows the calendar and we can't pretend Christmas is on a different day) and the younger one will be almost 2.5 years old.  My older one would be pretty upset if I wasn't home on Christmas morning....

With that said...which would you chose?

#1 - The morning of Dec 22nd (with my OB agreeing to 2 nights in the hospital) and going home on the 24th

#2 - The morning of Dec 26th (hoping that I don't go into labor on my own Dec 23-25th thus guaranteeing I would still be in the hospital on Christmas morning

Sooooooo WWD14D?

Re: Which RCS date would you pick?

  • I would probably go with option number 2.

You can't guarantee that you will be out in 2 days with option number one. Hopefully there aren't, but there could be reasons for you to need to stay in the hospital longer. That's a tricky one.

I'd plan for the 26th, but be prepared to go earlier if needed. If you chose the 22nd, I'd be concerned about a complication or something keeping you and/or baby in the hospital longer than 2 nights, and then everyone is disappointed. At least if you plan for the 26th, there's a good chance you'll make it, and if you don't, then it's sort of exciting because baby is being born, and not a "downer" because there is a complication. I hope that makes sense...

Edit: Plus, even though you'll be big and uncomfortable at Christmas, planning for the 26th allows you to enjoy the holiday without worrying about all the body fluids coming out of various orifices and recovering from c/s.

  • 22nd. Isn't it pretty common for RCS to be done right around 39w?
yes. So it would be 39w2d or 39w6d

Then based on your history, I'd do it on the 22nd because I'd hate to chance going into labor on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.  And then hopefully you can be camped out on the couch or whatever by Christmas morning :)

I get the dilemma.  My RCS is scheduled for Christmas Eve.

  • I'm in camp December 22. You'll be tired and recovering still on Christmas, but it's maybe a better birthday for the kiddo (I know...NOT a priority), and it prevents the risk of you going into labor on Christmas day.
  • I would pick the 22nd as well.

  • I would go w the 22nd. Planning for the 26th just screams natural labor on a day you don't want it!

  • That is the tricky one.... My options were Black Friday, the 29th of November, or (huge stretch) the 2nd of December. Black Friday was out. Eventually a child born on the 29th will have a birthday on Thanksgiving.... We went with the 29th of November (39W 1D) because the OB REALLY wanted it then. So much so, she called the head of surgery department (instead of scheduler to scheduler) to see if she could do a Csection on the weekend that was a non emergency. Mainly because this is Csection #6.

That being said... I still am not sure. You have gone into labor before your due date... so I guess the 22nd to be safe... But realize, you could still be in the hospital on Christmas. All it takes is for a child to have jaundice and be kept. Or for something to happen and your Dr. feel it is safer to keep you. I never had to stay past day 3 till baby #4. She was kept because of jaundice and so they kept me too.

  • 22nd.  Then i could be home with all of my babies on christmas eve.  Its actually what i'm hoping for.  Due on Christmas but would love for her to come a few days early so i can have my complete family of 5 all together on Christmas night.

  • I would say the 22nd given your hx.

  • 22nd or a few days earlier if they let you. It would be better to have a planned c section than an emergency one on Christmas Day.
  • I think I'd go with the 26th in most circumstances, but given your history I'd go with the 22nd and pray that you are in fact out by the 24th.

Just for the record, my birthday is the 29th and Thanksgiving has never fallen on my birthday, just the day before!
  • 22nd for sure. I would hate to have a bday the day after Christmas too.
  • I would probably go with the 22nd and pray that circumstances work so that you are out on time. Honestly though, with either of those dates, there is a good chance you will miss Christmas so I would probably make backup plans, just in case!
  • I vote the 22nd. But, wow, that's a whole lot of preparing beforehand, knowing you're going into hospital then having Christmas the day you come back!

  • I was originally due jan 3 and thought i was past all the holidays and then my doctor changed my due date to the 28th of dec. they said they would schedule between the 21-28th. im taking my chances and going with the 27th, i figured the 22-25 aren't good and the 26th wont allow my mom time to get here from far away. i didnt think they would schedule on a weekend but they said they would. since i have a 5 yr old and a 3 yr old i dont want to be exhausted from lack of sleep or recovering on xmas day

That's what i was about to say? Itd our anniversary, even if the 1st is a Thursday, the 29th can never be Thanksgiving! :)

You are right, @Rileymom1! The closest it gets is the 28th. My bad. I should have looked before assuming.

I still feel bad because I know how people like to treat holidays and children with birthdays around them. Or at least in our family. SO and I have agreed to NEVER allow our child's birthday to be celebrated at Thanksgiving unless the child is older and THEY wish it.

  • If you really want to be home for Christmas I would do the 26 th and hope and cross all fingers. Sometimes there are unforseen complications after surgery so there is never a guarantee you can leave day 2.

Also I'm having this kid the 29th as well, but I'm excited for her. She'll always get a splurgy badass B day present because it will probably be an awesome black Friday deal. And it's a super fun shopping weekend and a weekend always surrounded by family regardless!
